Juniata has study abroad programs on every continent except Antarctica and scholarship opportunities for international study. If you plan to pursue a Program of Emphasis (POE) in French, German, Russian, or Spanish and Hispanic Cultures, you will be required to study abroad. If you choose another POE, you can still incorporate language study as well as study abroad into your academic work. You can also choose to take part in international service learning trips in locations such as The Gambia, Northern Ireland, Guatemala, and The Dominican Republic.

Take advantage of extensive opportunities in international internships. Recent graduates have completed internships in a second language at NGOs, government offices, and private businesses in locations such as Paris, Strasbourg, Brussels, and Madrid. Six-week non-credit internships are offered in Orizaba, Veracruz, Mexico as part of Juniata’s short-term study abroad program at IDEA de Oriente, and since 2016 three of those students have received a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Dozens of students have interned in Spanish in private hospitals, social service agencies, and for-profit companies. Others have taught English in private schools.

Become a part of one of Juniata’s most successful outreach programs, Language in Motion, which provides opportunities for study abroad returners, international students, heritage speakers, and students studying languages to give presentations to K-12 students throughout central Pennsylvania.
Outcomes
Our recent graduates are employed by the Institute of International Education, the French Ministry of Education, the American Council for International Education, and several private and public secondary schools. They land careers in industry, education, government, and public interest. Others are attending graduate school at places like Georgetown University and Rochester Institute of Technology.

Faculty
In the WLC department, 100 percent of full-time faculty have earned Ph.D.s, and they serve, first and foremost, as professors. In addition to receiving many awards for their distinguished teaching, they’ve authored and co-authored numerous articles, led service-learning trips and hold numerous professional association affiliations. Two have participated in National Endowment for the Humanities faculty seminars, and two have led Fulbright Group Projects Abroad to Morocco and Costa Rica. Together, the world languages and cultures faculty have taught and done research in Guatemala, Poland, Russia, Ecuador, Peru, Spain, and Germany. Each year, Juniata also hosts Fulbright Language Teaching instructors who are native speakers of French, German, Russian, and Spanish.

Student Opportunities
Student Organizations: Chinese Club, French Club, German Club, Russian Club and Spanish Club provide a variety of special opportunities for students to exercise their language skills. Events include Oktoberfest, Fiesta Latina, Spanish Immersion Day, Francophone Appreciation Week, Russian Dinner, and Chinese Moon Festival and New Year.
Global Village: Composed of several internationally themed living and learning communities, the Global Village encourages you to experience other cultures through in-depth cultural interaction with each other, faculty advisors, and native speakers. The Global Village includes the Intercultural Floor, El Rincón Hispánico, Haus Wanderlust, Le Village Francophone, and the Chinese Village.
Undergraduate Research: Conduct research with a faculty member. Some recent examples: Sam Wherley '19, senior distinction project on the issue of Catalonian autonomy; Megha Arora ’19, “La arquitectura de Santiago Calatrava.”; Shelby Pio '17, "Chaos and Truth: Tolstoy's Journey from 'Sevastopol Stories' to War and Peace."
Support: The Eagles Abroad Scholarship enables students to receive up to $3,000 each toward immersive study abroad experiences. Also included is a four-week language and cultural immersion experience, an opportunity to work with Language in Motion, and study abroad (junior year or semester). An endowed merit scholarship, named for Professor Emeritus Klaus Jaeger, has also recently been created for students studying German. Juniata’s Center for International Education will also help you identify additional scholarships to study abroad.
