HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Nancey Murphy, professor of Christian philosophy at Fuller Theological Seminary, will lecture at Juniata College on "Whatever Happened to the Soul: Theological and Scientific Perspectives of Human Nature" at 7 p.m., Monday, April 12, in Alumni Hall in the Brumbaugh Science Center on the Juniata campus.
The lecture is free and open to the public.

Murphy is a nationally known speaker and specialist on the relationship between theology and science. She has been a member of the faculty at Fuller Theological Seminary, in Pasadena, Calif., since 1989.

She has edited several books, including 1999's "Whatever Happened to the Soul," which received the 1999 Prize for Outstanding Books in Theology and the Natural Sciences from the Templeton Foundation. She also wrote "Anglo-American Postmodernity: Philosophical Perspectives on Science Religion and Ethics" and "Theology in the Age of Scientific Reasoning" in 1990, which received prizes from the American Academy of Religion and the Templeton Foundation. She co-wrote, with George Ellis, "On the Moral Nature of the Universe: Theology, Cosmology and Ethics." She is an editor for Christianity Today and is an ordained minister in the Church of the Brethren.

She earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy and psychology from Creighton University in Peoria, Ill., in 1973. She went on to earn a doctorate in the philosophy of science from the University of California-Berkeley in 1980 and a doctorate in theology from the Graduate Theological Union, in Berkeley, Calif., in 1987.

Her research interests center on the role of modern and postmodern philosophy in shaping Christian theology. She is a member of the board of directors for the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences in Berkeley, Calif.
