Lebanon Valley 13, Juniata 7

4/5/04--Huntingdon, Pa. ? Despite notching 13 hits, the Juniata College baseball team had its seven-game winning streak snapped as the Eagles fell to hot hitting Lebanon Valley 13-7 in Huntingdon Monday afternoon. The loss also ended Juniata?s five-game conference winning streak. The Eagles are now 12-7 on the season and 6-2 in conference play. Lebanon Valley improved to 5-11 overall and 2-5 in the conference.

The Eagles seemed poised to continue their conference success early on as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning. Darren Hake (Red Lion/Red Lion) delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the first to plate the team?s second run.

The visitors would cut the lead in half with one run in the top of the third off Eagle starter Jayme Fye (Phillipsburg/Phillipsburg). The Flying Dutchmen bats would then really catch fire in the top of the fourth as they drove home five runs on seven hits to take a 6-2 edge. Six of the seven hits in the inning were singles as Lebanon Valley continually found gaps in the Juniata outfield.

The Eagles then answered right back with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Matt Garner (Bellwood-Antis/Bellwood) doubled to start the inning, then came home on a Walt Goedkoop (Manheim Township/Lancaster) single. Troy Beaver (Bellwood-Antis/Bellwood) then plated a pair of runs with an RBI double and Juniata was back within a run.

That was as close as they would get however as Lebanon Valley added another pair of runs in the fifth to chase Fye from the game, then two more in the sixth and another three in the ninth.

Juniata would show signs of life in the bottom of the ninth with Zach Sternberg (McCaskey/Lancaster) and Garner each driving in runs with doubles, but it was not nearly enough as the visitors held on for the win.

Fye allowed 13 hits and eight runs in four plus innings as he suffered his first loss in conference this season. Juniata?s ace was 3-0 in conference games entering the game today.

Matthew Sanders got the win for Lebanon Valley as he lasted five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. Just two of his runs were earned.

Sternberg, Garner, Hake and Goedkoop all had a pair of hits for Juniata and each added one RBI. Sternberg, Garner and Goedkoop each also scored a run, while Beaver scored once and drove in two runs in the game.

Juniata will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to take on Commonwealth Conference foe Albright for a single nine-inning game.
