Juniata 16, Pitt-Greensburg 4

3/29/04--Huntingdon, Pa. ? The Juniata College baseball team continued its strong recent play as the Eagles pounded out 12 hits in a 16-4 victory over Pitt-Greensburg in Huntingdon Monday afternoon. The win was the seventh straight victory for Juniata and improved the Eagles to 12-6 on the season. Pitt-Greensburg dropped to 4-11 with the loss.

Juniata?s 16 runs was the highest single-game total this season. Juniata?s 12 hits marked the sixth time this year the Blue and Gold has piled up 10 or more hits.

Juniata took control of the game in the bottom of the bottom of the fifth inning as the Eagles broke a 3-3 tie by scoring five runs in the inning. Will Russell (Tyrone/Tyrone), Walt Goedkoop (Manheim Township/Lancaster) and Jesse Leonard (Shade/Johnstown) each notched RBI singles in the inning.

Juniata was also the beneficiary of two Pitt-Greensburg errors in the inning, which would be a theme throughout the game. The visiting Bobcats committed eight errors in the game, which led to six unearned runs for Juniata.

Juniata committed five errors of their own in the game, but Juniata hurlers worked around the miscues. Starter Darius Reed (Juniata Valley/Alexandria) tossed five innings, allowing three runs on five hits in earning his second win of the season. Three Eagle relievers then combined to toss four innings of two-hit relief.

Juniata put the game out of reach in the final two innings, plating four runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. Matt Garner (Bellwood-Antis/Bellwood) delivered the big blow in the seventh with a two RBI double. Goedkoop added a two RBI double of his own in the eighth to power Juniata offense.

The Eagles moved on top in the top of the first as Troy Beaver (Bellwood-Antis/Bellwood) singled, stole second, then came around on a pair of errors. After Pitt-Greensburg scored a pair in the top of the second one a two-run homer by Jim Reed, Juniata scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning to pull back in front.

The visitors tied the game in the top of the fifth before the Eagles put the big rally together in the bottom of the fifth.

Goedkoop paced the Juniata offense with two hits in four at-bats while scoring four runs and driving in three. Beaver finished 2-for-5 on the game with a pair of runs scored. Russell was 2-for-6 on the day with one RBI and two runs scored. Leonard finished with two RBI in the game.

The Eagles will look to continued their winning streak on Wednesday when they travel to take on non-conference opponent Frostburg State.
