MEN?S BASKETBALL (8-8, 2-4 Commonwealth): Jan. 27 at Lebanon Valley*; Jan 31 at Widener*.

Juniata earned a huge Commonwealth Conference victory with an 86-82 triumph over Albright this past week. The Eagles also dropped a tough conference outing at Susquehanna and fell to nonconference foe Pitt-Greensburg. Jeff Lau (York Catholic/Glen Rock) and Tommy McConnell (Bishop Guilfoyle) each scored 21 points in the win over Albright. Craig Biller (Penn Cambria/Loretto) and Nick Hager (Franklin/Franklin) each added 10 points for Juniata. Chris Jasiota (Oil City/Oil City) was the high rebounder for the Eagles with seven, and Lau, Jasiota and Travis Boyd (Juniata Valley/Barree) each passed out three assists. Lau again led Juniata as he scored a team-high 16 points against Susquehanna. McConnell was in double figures again with 14 points while leading the team with three assists. Jasiota filled up the box score with 10 points, a team-high eight rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Finally, Lau paced Juniata again with 12 points against Pitt-Greensburg. Biller led the team with four assists and Lau and Greg Ebert (Forbes Road/Waterfall) each grabbed five rebounds to lead the team.

WOMEN?S BASKETBALL (4-12, 1-5 Commonwealth): Jan. 28 at Lebanon Valley*; Jan 31 at Widener*.

Juniata captured its first conference win of the season with a 66-56 victory over Susquehanna this past week. The Eagles also fell to Albright by three in Commonwealth Conference action. Kristen Kirk (Newport/Newport) exploded for a career-high 25 points in the Eagles? win over Susquehanna. Kirk also grabbed eight rebounds in the win. Freshman Dana Reist (Manheim Central/Manheim) also notched a career high in the game as she tallied 15 points. Katie O?Brien (Southwestern/Hanover) added 10 points, nine rebounds and three assists for the Eagles, while Gretchen Hall (Cocalico/Denver) also passed out three assists. Against Albright, Jen Uhrich (Palmyra/Palmyra) led the team with 16 points on 6-7 shooting from the field. Kirk was in double figures again with 13 points in the contest. Reist led the team with eight rebounds and Hall again led the way with five assists.

Juniata evened their record at 1-1 with a 3-0 victory over Eastern Mennonite this past week. Juniata took the match by game scores of 30-28, 30-13, 30-25. After earning American Volleyball Coaches Association/Sports Imports Division III player of the week honors the previous week, Kenny Eiser (Central Bucks West/Doylestown) led Juniata with 13 kills and a .455 hitting percentage in the match. Ryan Genova (Antietam/Reading) and Glenn DeHaven (Walt Whitman/South Huntington, N.Y.) each had 11 kills, while DeHaven was tops on the team with five digs. Setter Ricky Ziegler (Northeastern/Manchester) filled up the stat sheet with 44 assists, three digs and three blocks. Libero Tim Cole (Pennsbury/Yardley) recorded three digs of his own, and Cordt Withum (Penn Manor/Holtwood) led the team with four blocks.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

Competing in the first scored meet of the season the Juniata College men?s track and field team compiled 67.50 points to place third in a field of eight teams at the DuCharme relays at Dickinson College this past week. The Eagle women placed sixth out of seven schools with 55 points. The strongest event for the men was the long jump where Jeremy Weber (Gardon Spot/Mohnton) and Gary Ondecko (Bishop Carroll/Northern Cambria) placed first and second respectively. Juniata also got a field-event win as Shawn Miller (Altoona/Altoona) placed first in the pole vault competition. Adam Loser (Central York/York) continued Juniata?s strong showing in the field events as he placed second in the high jump. Finally, Dusty Sier (Smithsburg/Smithsburg) ran to a sixth-place finish in the 55-meter dash. On the women?s side, Stefanie Rynkewitz (Lewistown/Lewistown) earned the top finish for Juniata as she placed second in the 55-meter dash. Juniata was also strong in the 55-meter hurdles as Misty Heuston (Central/Martinsburg) and Meredith Troutman (Meyersdale/Meyersdale) placed third and fourth respectively. Heuston added a fourth-place finish in the women?s high jump on her afternoon, and Kira Troutman (Line Mountain/Valley View) placed fourth in the shot put.

Juniata posted a pair of conference dual-meet victories this past week as they topped Susquehanna 118-80 and then swam past Elizabethtown 111-88. Against Susquehanna Juniata posted winning finishes in seven of 10 individual events. Among the first-place finishers for the Eagles was Kim Allen (Susquehanna Twp./Harrisburg) who touched the wall first in both the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard breaststroke. Kathy Trainor (Upper Merion/King of Prussia) was also a double winner for Juniata as she posted the best times in the 100-yard freestyle and the 50-yard free. Andrea Nulton (Tyrone Area/Tyrone) picked up a first-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle and Amy Hanson (Lancaster Catholic/Elizabethtown) finished first in the 200-yard freestyle. Sophomore Amanda Smith (Oliver M. Hazen/Court-Renton, Wash.) rounded out the top finishes for the Eagles, as she was the top finisher in the 400-yard individual medley. Juniata also played first in the 200-yard freestyle relay, while Juniata?s top relay team placed second in the 200-yard medley relay.

Along with Juniata?s first-place finishes, the Eagles posted runner-up finishes in six events. Allison Engle (Shippensburg Area/Shippensburg) placed second in two events, as did Rachel Almy (Foxcroft Academy/Charleston, Me.). Dana Gais (Kiski Area/Saltzburg) placed second in the 200-yard backstroke and Hanson added a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle to her first-place finish. Many of the same swimmers starred against Elizabethtown as Juniata had the top finisher in all but one individual event, and claimed a first-place finish in one of the two relays. Kimberly Dierolf (Boyertown Area/Barto) and Amy Sutherland (Norwich/Norwich, N.Y.) led the way for Juniata as they each claimed a pair of first-place finishes. Also earning individual victories for Juniata were Nulton in the 200-yard freestyle; Trainor in the 100-yard freestyle and Kim Allen in the 200-yard breaststroke. Nulton and Trainor also teamed up with Holly Gabries (Tunkhannock Area/Meshoppen) and Hanson to swim to a top finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Juniata also got three runner-up finishes in individual events. Gais touched the wall second in the 200-yard backstroke, while Almy was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle and Engle rounded out the second-place finishes by placing second in the 200-yard free.
