Huntingdon, Pa. — According to Lonnie Smith Jr., a member of the Huntingdon County Historical Society Board of Directors, Charles Dickens came through Huntingdon County the summer before he wrote A Christmas Carol. This December, Dickens returns to the Borough of Huntingdon when his play, A Christmas Carol, comes to life on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018.

Juniata students, faculty and a few guest stars will perform a 90-minute staged reading of Dickens’ classic story at 7:30 p.m for the public in the Stone Church of the Brethren. Admission is free for all, though donations will be accepted for the J.C Blair Memorial Hospital Foundation.

A Christmas Carol tells the story of the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge as he is confronted about his cruel ways by the ghost of his old business partner, Jacob Marley, as well as the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come.

“To me, A Christmas Carol is a cautionary tale,” says Neal Utterback, associate professor of theatre arts. “It reminds us what the holiday season is really about: taking care of each other, loving each other and not being selfish.”

Adapted by Mary Hausch, A Christmas Carol: A Reading has been directed by Utterback every year since 2013. James Latten, professor of music and director of instrumental music, will be the music director for this production.
