WOMEN?S SOCCER (1-1): Sept. 5-6 at SUNY Fredonia Tournament.


The Eagles started their season with a 1-1 record after the opening weekend. Juniata dropped a 2-0 decision at Mansfield University, but then romped over King?s College 7-1. Juniata came out strong in the first half where just two minutes into the game on a cross by Emily Endres (Warren/Warren), Rebecca Shoaf (Madison/Madison, N.J.) snuck one into the back of the net on a header. The Eagles notched three more goals in the first half. The first was by Lauren Smith (Emmaus/Zionsville) who was unassisted. The second of the three was nailed in by Desiree Wagner (Harbor Creek/Erie) and was assisted by Alison Kampstra (Chambersburg/Chambersburg). Kampstra added one of her own with four minutes left in the first half assisted by Laura Rawson (Richard Montgomery/Derwood, MD). The Eagles added three more goal in the second half while limiting King?s to two shots on goal. Amy Tyler had a goal 10 minutes into the second half and was assisted by Erin Harter and Nikki McLellan. Tyler assisted the next goal by Sarah Lester (Thomas Jefferson/Jefferson Hills). The last goal that the Eagles scored was by Becky Davis (York, Carmel, CA) who was assisted by Carrie Burkholder (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) and Rawson. Lindsey Treon ( Hollidaysburg/Duncansville) had two saves over the weekend.

WOMEN?S VOLLEYBALL (3-0): No matches this week.


The Eagles opened up their season on the road at the Wittenberg Invitational. The first match-up was against Georgetown College. The Eagles came out strong and defeated Georgetown three games to none. Danielle Hart (Central/Roaring Spring) who was named to the all tournament team led the team with 23 kills in the match and 2 service aces. Carli Dale (Cochranton/Cochranton) who was named to tournament MVP, dished out 42 assists in the outing with four kills to add to that. Katie Laucks (West York, York) added to the team?s success with nine kills and two blocks. Jenn and Lindsey Habel (Glen Oak, Canton, OH) both tacked on 5 kills apiece to the teams 49. Lindsey Habel also added defensively with 11 digs. Johanna Holtan (Fargo North, Fargo, ND) who was named to the all tournament team, led the Eagles defensively with 25 digs. In the three-game match Juniata won 30-23, 30-23, and 30-26. For the second match of the tournament the Eagles took on John Carroll, and defeated them three games to none. Katie Charles (Manheim Township/Lancaster) led the team offensively with 15 kills giving her a .682 attack percentage on the match. Jenn Habel wasn?t far behind she added 10 kills, while Katie Laucks tacked on nine more. Carli Dale aided the offense with her 46 assists and 3 kills while still helping the defense with 9 digs. Holtan once again dominated the match defensively with 25 digs. Melissa Berdine (Pine-Richland/Gibsonia) picked up 9 digs also adding to the teams 51 digs. Lindsey Habel and Danielle Hart also helped offensively with 6 kills apiece. In the three game match Juniata won 30-23, 30-24, and 30-13. In the third and final match of the weekend the eagles took on Wittenberg. Juniata dropped the first game of the night before rallying to top Wittenberg 3-1. Hart once again headed up the offensive for the Eagles with 23 kills. Laucks tacked on 17 kills to that with 3 blocks to add defensively. Charles added nine kills to the teams 69 while Jenn and Lindsey Habel each added 8 kills. Dale ran the offense posting 58 assists with 4 kills. Dale also picked up 16 digs in the match up. Johanna Holtan led defensively for the Eagles posting 29 digs. Lindsey Habel tacked on 13 digs and Katie Charles added 12 digs to that helping the teams 89 digs for the match. In the four game match, Juniata lost the first game 27-30. They won the last three games 32-30, 30-27 and 30-27. The weekend gave the Eagles a 3-0 record overall.

WOMEN?S FIELD HOCKEY (1-1): Sept. 2 at Indiana (Pa.); Sept. 5 vs. Washington & Jefferson; Sept. 6 at Johns Hopkins.

The Eagles came out strong in their home opener of the Juniata Field Hockey tournament with a 5-0 win over Neuman College. But Juniata could not claim their second-straight Juniata Field Hockey Tournament title as they dropped a marathon 1-0 match to Richard Stockton in the championship. Against Neumann the Eagle?s first goal came at 10:23 in the first half by Joanna Acri (East Pennsboro/Enola) who was assisted by Jean Silvey (Red Lion/Airvile). This was not the only goal scored by Acri in the game, as her second goal came about two and a half minutes later assisted by junior Grace McCluskey (West Perry/Elliottsburgh). In between Acri?s goal, Betsy Kusinez (Boyertown/Gilbertsville) found the cage off an assist from Billie Rickebaugh (East Juniata/McAlisterville). Rickenbaugh then closed out the scoring for Juniata with a goal with five minutes remaining in the first half. Jean Silvey who was one of the most consistent offensive threat throughout the game for the Eagles netted Juniata?s other goal. She railed in the fourth goal of the team?s five first-half goals, and also led the team with six shots. Juniata keeper Melonie Sappe? (Dallas/Shavertown) turned away two shots in capturing the victory, and Andrea Way (Fair Haven Union/Fair Haven, VT) closed out the frame in net with one save in the final 15 minutes. Keeping Neuman in the match was goalie Dena Colbertson who stopped 10 Juniata shots, and defended against nine penalty corners. Against Richard Stockton, the two teams played 100 minutes of field hockey, including two 15-minute sudden-death periods without scoring a goal. Finally Richard Stockton outlasted the Eagles on the third round of penalty strokes. Sappe? was still credited with the shutout.


MEN?S SOCCER: Sept. 2 at Caregie Mellon; Sept 5-6 at SUNY Fredonia Tournament.


Juniata dropped both of their matches at the season-opening Marietta College Tournament. In the opener the Eagles could not overcome two first-half goals as they fell to Wooster College 2-0. Freshman Mark Gurthridge (DuBois/DuBois) had two saves in his collegiate debut, while seven different players notched a shot for the blue and gold. In the consolation match, Josh Cady (Malvern Prep/Frazer) scored his first career collegiate goal on a penalty kick to give Juniata a 1-0 edge over Washington & Jefferson. But the Eagles surrendered the lead, and then Washington & Jefferson scored two minutes into the sudden death overtime to hand Juniata a 2-1 defeat. Guthridge notched five saves in this contest, while Cady and Takashi Suzuki (Sapporo Moiwa /Sapporo, Japan) each had two shots.
