Huntingdon, PA- Jennifer Steil will be visiting Juniata College to read excerpts from her book The Ambassador’s Wife in the Brumbaugh Academic Center’s newly renovated Alumni Hall. The event, which is Oct. 4, 2017 at 7p.m., is free and open to the public.

Jennifer Steil has published two books. Her first book, a memoir entitled The Woman Who Fell From the Sky, details her year in Yemen as the Editor-in-Chief of the Yemen Observer in 2006. Her second book, The Ambassador’s Wife, is a fictionalized telling of life in Yemen from the eyes of a kidnapped British woman who is married to the British Ambassador.

Steil has won various awards for her books. Published in 2015, The Ambassador’s Wife earned the 2013 William Faulkner-William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition Best Novel Award and the 2016 Philip McMath Post Publication Book Award.

Sponsored by The Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies, Steil’s presentation is indicative of The Institute’s increasing focus on bringing more literary artists to campus, especially those working to illuminate and advance peace efforts.

“Art is a way of saying things that are difficult to say outright,” said Stacia Fleegal, the Baker Institute’s assistant. Fleegal hopes that everyone attending the event will take away knowledge and understanding of a foreign culture.

The Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies is hoping to bring in one artist a year, in order to bring about more variety in the ways we experience peace building and education on campus.
