HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Gene Kelly, social justice and inclusion consultant, will be coming to Juniata College to speak about the social construction of today’s masculinity. He will be speaking at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 3, in Sill Boardroom in the von Liebig Center for Science on the Juniata campus. He will speak again at 7 p.m., also in Sill Boardroom.

This next installment of the “Beyond Tolerance” series will be a presentation on what Kelly calls, “The Man Box: Problematizing Today’s Masculinity.” The talk deals with the idea of masculinity, and the social factors that form it. There will be a discussion of what consequences may occur when people fall into these societal norms.

Another part of Kelly’s work is “SafeZone Training.” SafeZones are places people go to feel safe and welcome. Kelly’s training includes teaching the language and skills required to create safer and more unified environments.

His background includes a doctorate in human development from Marywood University in Scranton, Pa., as well as a 2003 master’s degree in higher education counseling from West Chester University. Kelly is currently working as a lecturer at Marywood when he is not on the road giving presentations.

Kelly also goes to schools to speak about sexual violence, various types of discrimination and social justice. Kelly has appeared at 14 colleges and universities, and has also spoken at 13 different conferences and organizations.
