JOHNSTOWN STUDENT AT JUNIATA COLLEGE TO PLAY SOLO WITH JUNIATA ORCHESTRA AT FALL CONCERT

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Juniata College Orchestra will feature a solo performance on flute from Katie Hilands, a senior from Johnstown, Pa., at its fall concert at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 24, in Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts on the Juniata campus.

Tickets for the concert are $5 for adults and Juniata students with ID or children under 18 are admitted free. The orchestra is directed by James Latten, associate professor of music at Juniata.

The concert will open with "Adante Festivo, by Jean Sibelius (1865-1957), a Finnish composer noted for his music reflecting the national pride of his country -- most memorably in such compositions as "Finlandia." This hymn-like composition has a single movement.

Next, flutist Katie Hilands, a senior at Juniata College from Johnstown, Pa., will perform as soloist with the orchestra on "Concertino for Flute and Orchestra, by Cecile Chaminade (1857-1944), a French composer and pianist. Much of Chaminade's work is relatively obscure today, although she was celebrated in her time, but the flute piece remains popular. Hilands is a co-winner of the Juniata College Concerto Competition.

The next selection features the entire orchestra playing "Concerto for Orchestra in D Major," by Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741), a Baroque composer best known for his instrumental concertos. A violinist, Vivaldi is best known today for his violin concertos, "The Four Seasons." "Concerto in D Major" has been used to showcase a variety of stringed instruments, including lute and guitar.

The Orchestra concert will close with "Capriol Suite," by Peter Warlock (1894-1930. Warlock was the pseudonym of Philip Arnold Heseltine, who began as a music critic and later wrote influential suites of music in various styles.
