HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Alcinda Honwana, a director of the Social Science Research Council, will lecture at Juniata College on "Children, War and Healing" at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19 in the Neff Lecture Hall in the von Liebig Center for Science on the Juniata campus.

The event is free and open to the public.

Honwana is program director of the research council. Prior to joining the council, she served in the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Children and Armed Conflict in New York City. During her time at the United Nations, she developed a research agenda on children and armed conflict that networked several research organizations and humanitarian organizations.

Born in Mozambique, Honwana earned a bachelor's degree from University Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo, Mozambique. She earned a master's degree from l'Universite de Paris 8 and earned a master's degree and a doctorate from the University of London.

Honwana was a senior lecturer at the University of Cape Town in South Africa and was a visiting professor at the New School University in New York City. Her research has focused on spirit possession and traditional healing in Mozambique. She is co-editor of the book "Makers and Breakers, Made and Broken: Children and Youth as Emerging Categories in Postcolonial Africa."

She is a member of the board of the Council for Development of Social Research in Africa and a member of the Social Science Research Council's advisory panel on Africa.
