HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College Athletics celebrated a year of success, recognized its most valuable players, and presented its "big five" awards at the 15th Annual Athletic Awards Night, held Sunday, May 1, in Ellis Hall.

Baseball first baseman Johnny Martinez (Mount Union, Pa./Mount Union) was presented with the Standford Mickle Award, which goes to the senior male athlete who has made the greatest contribution to Juniata Athletics.

Women's basketball forward Jen Hnatuck (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) was awarded the Charles Bargerstock '47 Award for greatest contribution to Juniata Athletics by a senior female athlete.

Women's volleyball setter Steph Strauss (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) received the Carolyn Stambaugh Award, which is awarded to the senior athlete who best exemplifies the qualities of winning attitude, self-confidence, concern for others, high sense of values, and enthusiasm for life.

Football's Mark Berguson (Mansfield, Pa./Mansfield) was presented the William R. Smaltz Award, which goes to a senior student-athlete who has demonstrated hard work and perseverance in his or her endeavors.

Men's cross country and track and field runner Kenny Goodfellow (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) was named the recipient of the John E. Blood Memorial Award, which is presented the senior student-athlete who has earned the highest grade point average combined with significant athletic achievement.

Martinez has been a four-year standout for Juniata baseball, playing in centerfield and at first base. Among Juniata career hitting leaders, he is tied for fourth in runs batted in (119), third in doubles (36), and second in hits (174). He is tied for ninth among career batting average leaders with a .370 batting average. Defensively, Martinez has a career .980 fielding percentage with just 13 errors in 654 chances. He earned All-Region Gold Glove honors last season in center field, and was a First team All-Landmark Conference selection in 2010.

Hnatuck is a four-time All-Landmark Conference selection, who earned Tri-Player of the Year honors in the Landmark this past season. She is second among Juniata career points leaders with 1,384, and is third on the career rebounding leaderboard with 909. Hnatuck's post play helped lead her team to four Landmark Conference tournament appearances, two NCAA tournament berths, an ECAC South championship, and the first conference title in program history.

Strauss has been Juniata women's volleyball's acknowledged leader on the court this, but she has also been a leader in the Juniata College community over her entire four years and has played a large role in shaping student life at Juniata. She has served as marketing chair of the Juniata Activities Board, and co-chaired JAB's Mountain Day committee. She is an executive board member of the Juniata Student Alumni Association, and been on the coordinating committees for Homecoming, Career Day, and the Senior Dinner. Strauss has been president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and coordinated women's volleyball's "Dig Pink" fundraiser for each of the past three seasons. On the court, this three-time All-American and ESPN First team Academic All-American finished her career with 3,424 assists, seventh among Juniata's all-time leaders.

Berguson has represented the Juniata football program with distinction over his four years on College Hill, playing in 21 games over his career. He became the Eagles' starting center at the start of the 2010 season, and in the latter part of the season he saw considerable playing time at the fullback position. In the classroom, Berguson has excelled as a mathematics major with minors in both biology and chemistry, and holds a 3.796 grade point average. He has interned with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, presenting his research at the NOAA Office of Education's Science and Education Symposium, and earned ESPN First team Academic All-District honors this past fall. Berguson serves as an officer of the Beta Beta Beta biology honor society, represents football on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and was named by his teammates to the Centennial Conference's All-Centennial Sportsmanship Team.

Goodfellow has been a steady contributor to the Juniata men's cross country and track and field programs, whether it has been on the course, on the track, or in the classroom. Among his career highlights, he finished fourth in the 10,000m run at this past weekend's 2011 Landmark Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 33:57.95. He has also recorded a pair of top 30 finishes at the Landmark Conference Cross Country Championship, and finished ninth in the 5000m at the 2011 Landmark indoor track and field meet with a time of 16:22.69 seconds. An eight-time Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll selection and seven-time Juniata College Dean's List honoree, Goodfellow was the recipient of a Congressional Goldwater Fellowship in 2010, awarded to promising students in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering. He holds a 4.000 grade point average, and will graduate this May with a degree in physics and mathematics. Goodfellow will attend the University of Rochester next fall to pursue a doctorate in optics.
