HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Nicholas Brown, a junior at Juniata College studying philosophy and ceramics, had one of his ceramic pieces, a tea bowl, accepted into a national juried exhibition, the Kansas City Clay Guild Tea Bowl National. Brown's work will be on display at the Bruce R Watkins Cultural Heritage Center in Kansas City, Mo. from June 10 through July 11.

The Tea Bowl National asks artists from across the country to submit tea bowls for the exhibit. Typically about 70 pieces are chosen from more than 300 entries, most of which come from professional artists.

Brown, the son of Mark and Susanne Brown of Jerusalem, Israel, entered a tea bowl fired in an anagama kiln, which uses wood fire and no glazes to achieve its ceramic effects. Brown received an Honorable Mention for another piece, a teapot, in Juniata's Student Exhibition, which ran from Feb. 24 to April 2.

"The student body at Juniata has a real awareness of the arts and the energy from people on campus just bounces off one another," he says. "Juniata is a great place to make art happen and talk about your ideas."

Brown started working with ceramics in high school and decided to pursue his interest at Juniata as a double major. He is a member and secretary for The Mud Junkies, a college's student ceramics club, and also is a member of the Student Food Initiative, a club focused on organic and healthy food.

The Tea Bowl national was juried by Steven Hill, a professional potter and author.
