HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College Athletics celebrated a year of success, recognized its most valuable players, and presented its "big five" awards at the 14th Annual Athletic Awards Night, held Sunday, May 2, in Ellis Hall.

Men's basketball guard Jeff Berkey (Stoystown, Pa./Shanksville-Stonycreek) was presented both the Stanford Mickle Award, which goes to the senior male athlete who has made the greatest contribution to Juniata Athletics, as well as the John E. Blood Memorial Award, which is presented the senior student-athlete who has earned the highest grade point average combined with significant athletic achievement.

Women's volleyball libero Megan Sollenberger (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) was awarded the Charles Bargerstock '47 Award for greatest contribution to Juniata Athletics by a senior female athlete.

Women's soccer midfielder Amanda Broadwell (Newfoundland, N.J./Morris Knolls) received the Carolyn Stambaugh Award, which is awarded to the senior athlete who best exemplifies the qualities of winning attitude, self-confidence, concern for others, high sense of values, and enthusiasm for life.

Baseball's Andrew Kriss (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) was presented the William R. Smaltz Award, which goes to a senior student-athlete who has demonstrated hard work and perseverance in his or her endeavors.

Berkey, a business management student with a secondary emphasis in politics, is a seven-time Dean's List student, and an ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA First team Academic All-District selection. On the court, he finished fourth all-time among Juniata three-point leaders with 158 three-point field goals made, and he is third in three-point shooting percentage. A two-time team captain, he was a career .843 free-throw shooter. Berkey was named Second team All-Landmark Conference in each of his final two seasons at Juniata, and was named the Landmark's Senior Scholar-Athlete in men's basketball.

Sollenberger, a member of Juniata's 2006 NCAA Division III National Championship squad, concluded her career as Juniata's all-time digs leader with 2,839 - over 400 more than any other player. She was a three-time American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American, climbing the ladder each year before earning First team honors this season. A business management student, Sollenberger was named the Landmark's Senior Scholar-Athlete in the sport of women's volleyball.

Broadwell has worked just as hard off the field as she did on the soccer pitch over her four years at Juniata, with her efforts to make Juniata a more sustainable campus. She is president of the campus' Environmental Coalition and key member of the College's Sustainability Committee, coordinating Sustainability Day back in October - in the middle of soccer season. Broadwell spearheaded an effort to make Juniata women's soccer the first athletic team, and among the first student organizations on campus, to earn a "green seal" designation from Juniata's vice president for finance & operations. She has studied in Ecuador and on the Galapagos Islands, and spent this past summer as a park ranger at Glacier National Park in Montana. She is returning to Glacier this summer to study the migration patterns and habits of wolves.

Kriss has emerged as Juniata's offensive leader on the baseball diamond this season, leading the Eagles in hits (64), runs scored (37), doubles (13), and stolen bases (11 of 13). He has missed only six of Juniata's 145 games played during his career, and has made 135 starts. Kriss leads Juniata into the Landmark Conference Baseball Tournament with a .441 batting average - this from a player who had not batted above .300 in any of his first three seasons at Juniata. His 64 hits places him second among Juniata single-season leaders, and his 160 career hits is tied for fifth among all-time Juniata leaders.
