HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Juniata College men's cross country team was picked to finish second in the Landmark Conference in 2009, according to preseason voting of the league's head coaches and sports information directors released on Wednesday.

Juniata finished with 78 points in the poll, just two points behind preseason favorite Susquehanna University with 80 points. The Crusaders and the Eagles finished one-two in the 2008 Landmark Conference Men's Cross Country Championship, which was held on Juniata's home course at Fort Roberdeau Historic Site.

Trailing Juniata is the University of Scranton with 61 points, and Moravian College in fourth place with 58 points. Catholic University (43 pts.) is in fifth place, followed by Merchant Marine (36 pts.) in sixth place, Goucher College (22 pts.) in seventh place, and Drew University (14 pts.) in eighth.

The Eagles return their top five runners from the 2008 squad, led by senior Sam Williams (Roaring Spring, Pa./Central), sophomore Ceth Parker (Sabillasville, Pa./Catoctin), and senior Matt Bailey (East Petersburg, Pa./Hempfield).

Juniata opens its 2009 season on September 5 at the Duquesne Duals in Pittsburgh, with the Landmark Conference Championship taking place on October 31 at Catholic University in Washington, D.C.
