Juniata Women's Swimming Team Wins Against Widener

WOMEN'S SWIMMING (3-3): Jan. 19 at Widener.
Juniata won its third straight dual meet with a 109-59 victory at Penn State-Altoona on Wednesday to close out first semester action. The Eagles had their home outing with Scranton on Saturday canceled. Against the Cougars, the 200-yard medley relay unit of freshman Heidi Blasenak (Central Dauphin/Harrisburg), sophomore Kim Allen (Susquehanna Township/Harrisburg), senior Jenn Dorsch (Gov. Thomas Johnson/Frederick, MD) and freshman Kathleen Trainor (Upper Merion/King of Prussia) got things started with a first-place time of 2:00.12. During the final race of the outing, Trainor, freshman Beth Ann Bono (Hempfield Central/Greensburg), Blasenak and Dorsch took top honors in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:47.20). Individually, Allen won the 100-yard (1:08.28) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.29). Trainor ended the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle (2:05.80), while Bono touched first in the 50-yard freestyle (26.97) and the 100-yard freestyle (59.53). Freshman Amy Fletcher (Ephrata/Ephrata) won the 200-yard individual medley (2:30.30) and senior Erinn Soule (Manheim Township/Lititz) placed first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:57.23).

MEN'S BASKETBALL (6-2, 1-1 Commonwealth): Dec. 11, York (Pa.).
Juniata opened the past week of play with an 80-69 win at Messiah on Wednesday to begin Commonwealth Conference action in the 2001-02 season. The last time the Eagles won their conference opener was during the 1993-94 campaign. Juniata was up, 34-33, at halftime, but shot 70 percent from the floor in the second half to knock off the host Falcons. Sophomore forward Ben Gallagher (Butler/Butler) had 25 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists in the game, while senior forward Dave Reddick (North Hills/Pittsburgh) tallied 20 points and had three boards. Senior guard Shane Crandall (North Allegheny/Doylestown) posted 15 points. The win moved Juniata to its best seven-game start since the 1913-14 season. On Saturday, visiting Widener posted a convincing 64-46 Commonwealth win over Juniata, which was attempting to become the first team in the history of the College Hill men's program to start a year with a 7-1 record. The Pioneers are the defending Commonwealth champions. Gallagher had 12 points, three boards, three assists and two steals, while Reddick had eight points and a game-best 14 rebounds (10 in the first half).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (2-6, 1-1 Commonwealth): Dec. 11, Grove City.
The Eagles split a pair of conference outings during the past seven days. On Tuesday, Juniata journeyed down to nationally-ranked and defending Commonwealth Conference champion Messiah, and suffered a 65-53 loss to the Falcons. Juniata committed 22 turnovers in the game and shot just 36 percent from the floor in the contest. Senior forward Brandy Preslovich (Bald Eagle Area/Moshannon) had 17 points, seven rebounds, three blocked shots, one steal and one assists for the Eagles. Junior guard Casey Shoup (Altoona/Altoona) registered 12 points, six rebounds and two steals, while senior guard Kelli Young (United/Vintondale) had nine points, six boards, four assists and one steal. On Saturday, Juniata snapped a three-game losing streak with a 70-55 victory over visiting Widener. Preslovich led the way with 20 points, three rebounds, four steals and a blocked shot. In addition to Preslovich, who had 12 of her 20 points in the second half before fouling out, Young had 11 points, eight assists, five rebounds and three steals, while junior guard Jen LaCount (Westmont Hilltop/Johnstown) came off the bench to score 12.
