Lebanon Valley 3, Juniata 2 (OT)

Huntingdon, Pa. ? Despite a spirited comeback and several good chances in overtime the Juniata College field hockey team had its seven-match winning streak snapped as the Eagles dropped a 3-2 decision to Lebanon Valley College in overtime Thursday afternoon in Huntingdon. Juniata falls to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in conference action with the loss, while the visitors upped their record to 11-4 and 3-2 in the conference.

Trailing 2-1 after a pair of Lebanon Valley goals early in the second half, Juniata tied the score as Kim Wagner (Middletown/Middletown) knocked in a loose ball on the right side of the circle with 25 minutes left in the second half. Neither team was able to break through the rest of the half as the teams went to sudden death overtime.

Juniata had the best chances early in the overtime, forcing several penalty corners, and then earning a penalty stroke with just more than four minutes in the match. Amanda Wimer (Solanco/Quarryville) came off the bench to take the stroke, but Katie Pawlewicz made her sixth save of the match to extend the overtime.

One minute later, Lebanon Valley earned its first penalty corner of the overtime period. Mimi Sullivan fired a shot that Andrea Way (Fair Haven Union/Fair Haven, Vt.) saved, but Claire Behney was able to knock the rebound home for the game winner.

Way finished with seven saves in the match for Juniata, while Pawlewicz stopped six shots.

Juniata struck first in the match as a long pass from Wimer sprung Sarah Bender (Eastern York/York) who beat two defenders and slipped the ball past the keeper for Juniata?s first tally 13 minutes into the match.

The Flying Dutchmen then came out firing in the second half, putting two goals on the board in the first five minutes of the second stanza. Mimi Sullivan ran onto a loose ball in the circle and drove it into the goal. The second goal again came off a corner. Way turned away another long shot, only to have Behney lift a rebound into the upper corner for the second score.

Lebanon Valley kept Juniata off the scoreboard until Wagner tied the match in the 50th minute.

The Eagles will try and get back into the win column next Thursday when they host conference foe Messiah.
