Juniata 5, Widener 2

Altoona, Pa.? The Juniata College men?s tennis team battled through losses at the top two singles positions to earn its first conference victory of the 2005 season with a 5-2 triumph over Widener University in Altoona Saturday afternoon. Juniata earned four singles victories and claimed the doubles point with two victories to improve to 2-1 on the season. Widener fell to 1-2 with the loss.

Juniata claimed singles wins at the third, fourth, fifth and sixth singles spot, including a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins to propel them to the win. David Bullock (Central Bucks East/Jamison) didn?t drop a game at the third dingles spot, and Romain Plessis (Catholic University of Lille/Brassens, France) swept the sixth singles match. Jonathan Cohen (Highland Regional/Hollywood, Fla.) notched a 6-3, 6-4 win at four singles, with Tom Nelson (State College/State College) capturing a 6-2, 6-3 win at the fifth singles spot.

In doubles action Juniata dropped the first doubles match, but then earned the doubles points with wins at the second and third doubles matches. Cohen and Nelson teamed up to claim an 8-2 win at the second doubles spot, and Sykes and Plessis posted an 8-2 win at third doubles.

Juniata will return to action on Monday when the Eagles play host Penn State-Altoona for a non-conference match.
