Juniata 10, Moravian 3

Chandler, Ariz. ? The Juniata College baseball team rode an outstanding pitching performance from freshman Jason Enoch (Hempfield/Landisville) to a 10-3 victory over Commonwealth Conference foe Moravian in Chandler Ariz. Monday evening. The win improved Juniata to 5-1 overall and gave the Eagles a sweep of the three-game series against Moravian.

Enoch was nearly unhittable in his first career start as the freshman struck out 15 in just six innings of work. He held the Greyhounds to just two hits and did not allow a run in six innings as he captured his first collegiate win. The 15 strikeouts are the most a Juniata pitcher has had in the four-plus seasons that George Zanic has been the head coach of the Eagles.

Juniata gave Enoch all the support he would need when they put four runs on the board in the top of the fourth. Walt Goedkoop (Manheim Township/Lancaster) walked and was driven home when Zach Sternberg (McCaskey/Lancaster) followed with a double. After a Matt Garner (Bellwood-Antis/Bellwood) single, Darren Hake (Red Lion/Red Lion) knocked out a two-run double to make the score 3-0 Juniata. After another out David Saintz (Titusville/Titusville) added the third double of the frame to score Hake and put Juniata in front 4-0.

Juniata added an unearned run in the sixth, and then pushed across two more runs in the top of the eighth. An RBI single from Paul Evans (Huntingdon/Huntingdon) brought home Troy Beaver (Bellwood-Antis/Bellwood) for a 6-0 Eagle lead. A wild pitch led to the second Juniata run in the inning.

The Greyhounds did break through against Juniata in the bottom of the eighth. The first four batters of the inning reached for Moravian, with an RBI double from Steve Tomaszewski bringing in the second run of the inning to make the score 7-2 Juniata. Paul Dunklebarger (State College/State College) then came on in relief and gave up a sacrifice fly which made the score 7-3, before he got out of the inning.

Juniata added three more runs in the ninth with an RBI single from Beaver knocking in the first, followed by to unearned runs.

Sternberg paced the Juniata offensive attack as he finished with three hits, a run scored and an RBI. Hake was 2-for-5 on the day with two RBI and two runs score, while Beaver also had two hits and scored twice. Jesse Leonard (Shade/Johnstown) and Russell both also finished with two hits.

Juniata will look to continue its winning ways on its spring break trip as the Eagles take on Lake Erie College tomorrow afternoon.
