Wilkes-Barre, Pa.? The Juniata College women?s swimming team piled up 175 points, good for second place on the first day of competition at the 2005 MAC swimming championships. Juniata, which finished the regular season with a program record 11 dual-meet victories, is looking to top its best-ever third-place finish at last year?s conference championship.

Juniata sits 53 points behind first-place Albright and is 43.5 points ahead of The University of Scranton.

Juniata opened the meet with a second-place effort in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Eagle team of Dana Gais (Kiski Area/Saltsburg), Allison Sweigart (Muhlenberg/Reading), Kathy Trainor (King of Prussia/Lower Merion) and Amy Hanson (Lancaster Catholic/Elizabethtown) piled up 34 points for Juniata as they posted a school-record time of 1:39.95.

Freshman Kasey Brough (Carlisle/Gardners) followed up that effort by earning 16 points for Juniata with a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle. Kimberly Dierolf (Boyertown/Boyertown) and Engle added seventh and eighth-place finishes respectively in the event.

The success continued for Juniata in the 200-yard individual medley. Amy Sutherland (Norwich/Norwich, N.Y.) placed fifth in the event with a time of 2:18.78. Gais also captured points in the event with her seventh-place finish.
