Mary Washington 3, Juniata 1

Fredericksburg, Va. ? The Juniata College field hockey team had its program-record six-match winning streak snapped as Mary Washington scored three second-half goals to hand Juniata a 3-1 loss in Fredericksburg Sunday afternoon. Juniata is now 11-2 overall, while Mary Washington improved to 11-3 with the win.

After a scoreless first half, the home team came out of halftime on fire as they scored three goals in a 13-minute span to take control of the match 3-0. Jena Elliott got the scoring started ten minutes into the second half with a goal off an assist from Laura Fazzaro. Four minutes later Elliott notched a second tally, corralling a pass from Meghan Punaro and adding the second score.

Mary Washington then added an insurance goal was Caitlin O?Leary beat Eagle keeper Melonie Sappe? (Dallas/Shavertown) to bring the lead to 3-0. Kalyn Perkins assisted on the final goal for the home team

Juniata finally broke through with less than a minute remaining in the match as Kim Wagner (Middletown/Middletown) scored her team-leading 12th goal of the season with 44 seconds left in the game. Elise Zimmerman (Cumberland Valley/Boiling Springs) assisted on the score. But the score came too late in the game for Juniata to complete the comeback.

Despite the score, Juniata had the best of offensive play throughout the match. The Eagles out-shot the home team 11-6 and forced Mary Washington goalie Robyn Lankford to make six saves. Sappe? was called on to make just two saves for Juniata.

Juniata will continue its stretch of non-conference outings on Thursday when the Eagles travel to play at Seton Hill.
