Juniata 1, Albright 0

Huntingdon, Pa. ? Mike Gwiazdowski (Central York/York) scored his first career goal to break a scoreless tie and give the Juniata College men?s soccer team its first conference victory of the season 1-0 over Albright in Huntingdon Saturday afternoon.

Juniata improved to 4-9-1 overall and 1-3 in the Commonwealth Conference with the victory. Albright drops to 2-11-1 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

With the score knotted at zero, Gwiazdowski knocked one past Albright keeper Chad Shreiner at the 72:33 mark in the second half. Gwiazdowski has contributed three assists in his one-plus seasons at Juniata, but it marked the first time he had found the back of the net.

Juniata?s defense remained strong through the remainder of the half, holding the visitors to just two shots in the final 45 minutes to help Eagle keeper Mark Guthridge (DuBois/DuBois) post his second shutout of the season. The sophomore keeper made eight saves, in the match, with two of them coming in the second half to help Juniata preserve the lead.

Shreiner finished with seven saves in 90:00 for Albright, as Juniata fired 17 shots at the Albright net.

With three conference matches remaining on the schedule, Juniata needed to earn the victory today to maintain any hope of claiming one of the four Commonwealth Conference postseason spots.

The Eagle men will be back in action on Sunday as they travel to play a non-conference match at Pitt-Bradford.
