Widener 2, Juniata 1 (OT)

Huntingdon, Pa. ? An early overtime goal spoiled a Juniata College comeback as the Eagles men?s soccer team dropped its conference opener 2-1 in overtime against Widener University in Huntingdon Sunday afternoon. The Eagles are now 1-5-1 on the season and 0-1 in conference play, while Widener improved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in Commonwealth play.

Josh Cady (Malvern Prep./Frazer) knocked home his second goal of the year with just six minutes remaining in regulation to rally Juniata to a 1-1 tie. The goal came off a long throw-in from Robert Bowser (Dallastown/York) which found Cady on the far side of the box, and he hammered home the tying goal.

Juniata had just missed tying the score minutes earlier when a header from Mike Alianiello (Altoona/Altoona) sailed just wide of the Widener goal. It was one of one of 11 Juniata shots on the match.

But the Eagles? comeback was short lived as a deflected ball in the box came down on the foot of Widener forward Eric Wyzykowski who slotted it past Juniata keeper Mark Guthridge (DuBois/DuBois) five minutes into the sudden-death overtime period to give Widener the victory.

Widener took its 1-0 lead early in the first half. Steve Kientzy scored off an assist from Wyzykowski in the 15th minute to give the visitors an edge.

Pioneer keeper Jason Delozier made four saves in the match, while Guthridge stopped five shots for Juniata. The shots were nearly even, with Widener firing off 15 to Juniata?s 11.

Juniata will be back in action on Thursday when the Eagles play at non-conference foe Mount Aloysius.
