HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College has scheduled a series of events designed to educate students and local residents about the Holocaust, beginning with a showing of the documentary, "Paper Clips," followed by a discussion period, at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, March 26 in the lounge of Tussey-Terrace residence hall.

All events, which are part of Holocaust Awareness Week, are free and open to the public.

"Paper Clips" is a documentary that follows a class project by students at Whitwell Middle School in rural Tennessee. The students, initially struggling to grasp the enormity of 6 million Holocaust victims, decide to collect 6 million paper clips in order to better understand the systematic murder of Jews. The film follows the students as they meet Holocaust survivors from around the world. The film shows how the students are transformed by the project and how the community supports the project.

A panel of Juniata faculty members will discuss issues relating to the Holocaust. "The Effects of the Holocaust" will start at 7:30 p.m. Monday March 27 in Neff Lecture Hall in the von Liebig Center for Science. Members of the panel include, Emil Nagengast, associate professor of politics; Janet Lewis, professor of philosophy; Celia Cook-Huffman, professor of conflict resolution; and Robert Miller, associate professor of religious studies.

Holocaust survivor Inge Auerbacher will give a talk at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 28 in Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts. Auerbacher is a survivor of the Theresienstadt concentration camp in Czechoslovakia. She was there three years, when she was between seven and 10 years of age.

She has written two books about her experiences, "I Am a Star: Child of the Holocaust" and "Beyond the Yellow Star to America." Auerbacher and her parents survived the concentration camp and were freed by Allied forces in 1945. She has lectured across the United States. She received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 1999 and the Louis E. Yavner Citizen Award in 1998.
