Do you offer food service?
Yes. Travis Crawford is the chef working at the field station. He is happy to provide
for your needs. His email is crawfot@juniata.edu.
Is there kitchen space available to users?
Yes. There is a small kitchen off of the main room in Shuster Hall. It has a range,
microwave, toaster and refrigerator. The commercial kitchen is not available for users.
Is there a grill available?
Yes. There is a park style charcoal grill at the far end of the lodges which is available
for your use. Bring your own charcoal and extinguish your hot coals in the metal can
which is next to the grill.
Do you have an ice machine?
Yes and it available for your use.
Do you offer table linens? What about napkins, etc.?
No. We do not offer linens though you are welcome to bring your own.
How big are the tables? How many are there?
There are ten 3’x6’ tables and ten 18”x6’ tables inside. There are also three 3’x6’
tables on the deck.
Do you have table settings?
Yes. We have plates, bowls, glasses, mugs and silverware that are available.
What is your alcohol policy?
Our policy is consistent with Conference and Events. Events must receive prior approval
if alcohol will be served at RFS functions. Direct requests to Chuck Yohn.
Can you provide wine glasses?
Yes. There are 100 six ounce glasses available
How big is the seating area?
The main room in Shuster Hall is 54’x30’ through about 6’ of usable space is lost
due to the fireplace and the food serving tables.
How many people can be accommodated in Shuster Hall?
The building has a capacity of 100 people but it is most comfortable with groups of
80 or less.
Do you have audio and video equipment?
Yes. There is a large flat screen monitor that is available. It is connected with
a compact stereo which can be used for AV purposes. There is also a screen for using
a projector available on both levels in Shuster Hall. Excess lighting can be a limiting
factor when using the projector upstairs.
Are you expected to clean up after your event?
Yes. The facilities will be clean prior to your arrival. You are expected to return
EVERYTHING to the way you found it before you leave. All trash and recyclables are
to be bagged and left for collection by RFS staff.
May we build a campfire?
Yes. There is a fire ring near the lake shore down the trail by the shed. Please make
sure your fire is extinguished when you are done. You may only build fires in approved
locations.
May we swim in the lake?
Yes. We have a lakeside recreation area with a pebble “beach” where RFS users can
swim in the lake. However, be aware that this area is NOT a no-wake zone and experiences
high boat traffic. Swimmers should stay close to the shoreline and should never swim
alone.
Are there boats available for recreational use?
Yes. Only non-powered boats are available. We have a fleet of 6 canoes and 11 kayaks
available for rental to Juniata students and employees. Users must complete a water
safety course before going out on the water- see our webpage on boat rentals for further details.
What if it snows?
We do not maintain the roads during a snow storm. Our roads are hilly and quickly
become impassable in bad weather. Call ahead if you have an event and the weather
is threatening. For safety’s sake we reserve the right to cancel your event.
