Alumni
Vickie Arthur ’14 is currently a Ph.D student in biostatistics at University of Pennsylvania. Prior to that she had a post baccalaureate research at the National Institutes of Health. Her work at NIH mirrors her work at Juniata where she blended math and biology to research in the burgeoning field of bioinformatics.
Tim Berguson ’13, who studied physics and math at Juniata, is currently pursuing his graduate degree in physics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.
Rebecca Drucker ’18 is enrolled in a doctoral program in computer science at Stony Brook University. She is a teaching assistant at Stony Brook, so the University is covering her tuition with a full scholarship.
The Math Modeling team of Ruinan Gao ’18, Anh Ha ’17, and Dianqin Huang ’18 earned a Meritorious Rating in the 2017 Mathematical Contest in Modeling, an international competition sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications. Meritorious is the second-highest rating, and it’s only the second time a Juniata team has earned this result. A Meritorious rating puts the team in the top nine percent of 8,843 teams worldwide.
Alexis Klein ’16 will be working as a camp counselor for the sixth summer in a row at Shiloh Quaker Camp in Stanardsville, Virginia.
Oyinlola Lesi ’14 is employed at Goldman Sachs where she works in the operations division in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Kate Lorenzen ’16 is continuing her study of math in graduate school at Iowa State University.
William McGrew ’14 is attending the University of Colorado where he is pursuing a doctorate in physics.
Duncan Morgen-Westrick ’15 whose POE at Juniata was computer science with a secondary emphasis in mathematics, is employed as a software quality engineer at Northrop Grumman in Melbourne, Florida., doing “big picture” software engineering.
Dana Relation ’14 is enrolled at Purdue University to receive a master’s degree in business.
Zeph Turner ’18 is employed by The Aerospace Corporation in their Computers and Software division.
Faculty
Juniata College mathematics faculty have won awards from the Allegheny Mountain Section of the Mathematical Association of America (covering Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia). Dr. Jerry Kruse received the Distinguished Teaching Award in 2011, Dr. John Bukowski received the Service Award in 2011, and Dr. Cathy Stenson received the Distinguished Mentor Award in 2015.
Dr. Kim Roth was awarded the Robert V. Hogg Award for Excellence in Teaching Introductory Statistics in 2019 from the Special Interest Group of the Mathematical Association of America in Statistics Education. This award provides recognition to an individual who has been teaching introductory statistics at the college level for between three (3) and fifteen (15) years, and who has shown both excellence and growth in teaching during that time. It is named in honor of Robert V. Hogg, winner of numerous teaching accolades including the Iowa Governor’s Science Medal for Teaching in 1990 and the MAA’s Distinguished Teaching award in 1993. Hogg was also a passionate advocate for statistics education who served as the President of the American Statistical Association in 1988.
Dr. Kim Roth and Dr. John Bukowski are officers of the Allegheny Mountain Section of the Mathematical Association of America. Dr. Roth is Co-Coordinator of Section NExT (New Experiences in Teaching), and Dr. Bukowski is Section Historian. Both are former Chairs of the Section, while Dr. Bukowski also served previously as Section Governor.
Dr. Jerry Kruse recently served as Director of the James J. Lakso Center for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at Juniata. Dr. Kim Roth is currently the Director of the James J. Lakso Center for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at Juniata.
The mathematics faculty are advocates for international experiences. Dr. Henry Escuadro taught mathematics at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines while on sabbatical in Fall 2013. Dr. John Bukowski taught history of mathematics at Leiden University in the Netherlands while on sabbatical in Spring 2012 and has taught at ISEN in Lille, France. Dr. Jerry Kruse taught computer science at the Fachhochschule Muenster in Germany during the Fall 2006 semester as part of a faculty exchange. Dr. Kim Roth has taught at ISA in Lille, France. Dr. Kim Roth and Dr. Kristin Camenga participated in the prestigious Budapest Semesters in Mathematics when she was an undergraduate student.
Drs. John Bukowski, Cathy Stenson, Kim Roth, and Henry Escuadro have all been Fellows of Project NExT, a program of the Mathematical Association of America for new mathematics faculty interested in improving the teaching and learning of undergraduate mathematics, among other topics.
The Department of Mathematics is very musical! Ben Sunderland, Cathy Stenson, Kim Roth, and Henry Escuadro have all sung in Juniata's Choral Union. John Bukowski serves as piano accompanist for the Choral Union and Concert Choir, and he performed a solo recital in Salvador, Brazil, in 2010.
