Juniata attracts faculty who are committed to upholding our community ideals and to engaging students in experiences that complement and enrich their education. The faculty, and the students who have worked with them, have raised the expectation of what it means to earn a Juniata education.
- Recruiting faculty is expensive, and recruiting the best ones costs more than it does
to recruit those in the middle of the pack. The extra expense is pertinent to setting
our students up for future success. Faculty can request--and reasonably expect--funds
to cover:
- Technology needs
- Library acquisitions
- Seed money for teaching and research projects
- Summer support to involve students in research
- And more!
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it cost to establish an endowed professorship?
The minimum gifts for endowing professorial positions depend on the kind of position.
- New Faculty Funds: Individuals can establish endowments to support the College as it recruits and hires new faculty. New Faculty Funds, established with gifts starting at $500,000, will help cover the expenses associated with getting new professors off to a good start.
- Endowed Professorships: Endowed professorships either recognize faculty in current positions at Juniata or provide funds to add positions to the faculty. Gifts of $1 million constitute the principal of endowments that provide awards to current faculty who exhibit exemplary teaching and service to the College. Gifts of $2 million establish a new senior position to the faculty of the College.
In both cases, individuals can state a preference for establishing a professorship in a particular department (biology, English, etc.) or field (science, arts, humanities, etc.), or one awarded at the discretion of the president in consultation with the Office of the Provost. Endowed professorships are usually awarded to individuals for the length of their career at Juniata.
How is the money spent?
Funding made available by endowed professorships provides permanent support for a faculty position at Juniata. In addition, it provides the named professor with a modest additional award stipend that professors very often then use to augment their courses or otherwise help create opportunities for students.
What effect do professorships have?
By providing a permanent source of support for the College's efforts to attract and retain professors, endowments ensure the College can build and sustain a top quality faculty. Juniata's distinct educational program demands flexibility and innovation, and is thus dependent on professors who complement students' creativity and passion in crafting their POEs with their own wide knowledge and professional acumen. Endowments reward and empower those professors who can best respond to student initiative and to innovate with their teaching and research, to the ultimate benefit of all Juniata students.
