Unlike most institutions, Juniata doesn't continue to use the antiquated "major" system. Instead students are allowed to create their own major using what is called the Program of Emphasis. The Program of Emphasis (POE) provides students with a solid foundation in a specific discipline, while the liberal arts curriculum enhances the overall educational experience by exposing students to much more. The flexibility of the POE enables students to create a unique program tailored to meet personal interests and career aspirations. Chemistry students, for example, may study philosophy, students in communication may study biology, art historians learn about marketing research and political scientists explore early childhood development.

Students may design their own Program of Emphasis or choose from over 60 designated programs that already exist.
