HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Three Juniata College graduating seniors were awarded Fulbright grants by the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. The three students, who graduated in May 2005, are part of a program that sends more than 1,000 students abroad to study at foreign universities and sites.

Todd Ellick, of Altoona, Pa., will spend the next year teaching English as a Second Language to German high school students. He received a Padagogischer Austauschdienst Teaching Assistantship/Fulbright Grant to Germany for the 2005-2006 grant year.

Ellick graduated from Juniata College in May with a bachelor's degree in German and Russian Area Studies.

Leslie Vogt, of Venice, Fla., will spend the next year at the University of Augsburg in Germany in order to study air pollution. After her Fulbright grant ends, Vogt will attend Harvard University as a doctoral student in chemistry.

Vogt graduated from Juniata College in May with a bachelor's degree in physical chemistry. She received a Goldwater Scholarship for the 2003-2004 academic year and performed with the college's Wind Symphony.

Jeremy Weber, of Mohnton, Pa., will travel to Peru to conduct an independent research project on rice farming and economic development policy during the coming academic year. Weber was also named to the USA Today All-USA Academic team and was named an Academic All-America in track and field.
Weber graduated from Juniata College with a bachelor's degree in international political economy.

The Fulbright program, established in 1947 by the late Sen. William Fulbright of Arkansas, is intended to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the rest of the world.

The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the state department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Since its beginning, the program has exchanged mpre than 250,000 students, scholars and teachers. The program operates in more than 150 countries worldwide.

Fulbright grantees are among more than 30,000 individuals participating in U.S. State Department programs each year.
