Remembering Rev. Dr. W. Clemens “Clem” Rosenberger ’54

At the funeral of Clem’s wife, Margaret, in February 2020, Pat and I promised Clem ’54 that we would be back to see him later in the year. To our tremendous regret COVID-19 intervened and our plan was never realized. We had the wonderful privilege of knowing Clem since 1998 when we joined the Juniata community. Over the years, Clem often expressed his pride of the Rosenberger family connection to the College. His father, Lester, Juniata Trustee (1952-1979), helped convince his friend, J. Omar Good, to include Juniata in his estate which became Juniata’s largest gift at that time. Clem, as chair (and his sister, Nancy Faus-Mullen ’56 as a member) of the J. Omar Good Endowment Fund Trustees, helped steer the Good Endowment through changing times and new opportunities. He did so with a never-failing focus on the Endowment’s original intent to strengthen religion at Juniata.

Remembering George E. Cruser ’52

From the moment George Cruser began his studies at Juniata, his love for the College was clear. He earned his degree in 1952 and went on to receive his master’s of business administration degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1954.

Mr. Cruiser served on the board of trustees at Juniata College for many years and held in high esteem as a trustee emeritus. He and his wife, Susan, were lead contributors in the effort to construct the Kepple Hall Integrated Media Arts Building. The couple also founded the George E. ’52 and Susan W Cruser Endowed Scholarship.

Remembering William B. Martin ’59

A veteran, a civic leader, and a community servant, William Martin began his studies at Juniata College as an adult following his discharge from the United States Navy following his service during the Korean War. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1959, and returned to the College as the Director of Alumni Relations and Placement in 1962.

He remained an active member of Juniata’s Alumni Council throughout his life.

Dorothy M. (Kauffman) Luty ’38

Oct. 31, 2020—Dorothy taught first grade in Washington Township as well as the Waynesboro School District in Pennsylvania. She taught Sunday School at the Church of the Brethren in Waynesboro for 20 years and was a member of the church choir for more than 50 years. She was an active member of many organizations including South Chapter #2977 AARP, Waynesboro Hospital Auxiliary, BPOE Lodge #731 Auxiliary, Lamba Master Sorority, YMCA Heritage Club, Renfrew Museum, and a life member of the Antietam Humane Society and Waynesboro College Club. She loved spending her weekends in the Waynesboro Mountains with her family as well as playing bridge with her friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, John Luty Jr. ’39, whom she met while attending Juniata, and sister Pauline (Kauffman) Maxwell ’35, and is survived by son James Luty ’69.

C. Blanche (Gillaspie) Milligan ’39

Jan. 27, 2021—Blanche received her master’s degree from the University of Florida and later taught in Belleview, Fla. She was a veteran of World War II. She loved spending her summers outdoors and was a member of the Wehnwood United Methodist Church. Blanche was preceded in death by husband Edward.

E. Grace (Ritchey) Switzer ’42

Sept. 13, 2020—Grace worked as a teacher before joining the Church World Service during World War II. She met her husband, Roscoe, while in Belgium. After their time abroad, they moved to Kansas. Grace ran a daycare center and was an active member of the Church of the Brethren. Grace was preceded in death by husband Roscoe, and sisters Hilda (Ritchey) Middlekauff ’37 and Florence (Ritchey) Baker ’40. She is survived by daughters Lynda, Sharon, and Debbie, sons David and Bob, and 13 grandchildren.

Elizabeth A. Shaffer ’46

Nov. 24, 2020—Elizabeth graduated from Juniata and, shortly after, taught French here at Juniata. She later earned her master’s at the University of Pennsylvania. She taught at Greenbriar College and later taught Spanish and French at Pfeiffer College in N.C. She wrote “Boneset Tea and Beaten Biscuits, The Heritage of the Shaffer-Zimmerman and Devore-Cuppage Families.” She is survived by sister Mary Lou (Shaffer) Reichard ’47.

Doris M. (Eshbach) Muir ’48

Nov. 15, 2020—Doris taught English for many years at Dallastown Area High School, Donegal High School, and Everett PA High School. She also taught Sunday School at the former York Gospel Center and was a member of the York Alliance Church. She was a bible study leader and was active in the Ministry at York County Prison. Doris is survived by husband John, daughters Heather and Jennifer, and six grandchildren.

Clyde L. Mellinger Jr. ’48

Jan. 1, 2021—Clyde attended the Princeton Theological Seminary after graduating from Juniata. He began his career at 17 and pastored many churches after, such as Kilburn Memorial and Webster Presbyterian Church. He also worked to bring respite care to the Webster Community. He attained Pastor Emeritus status after serving at Webster Presbyterian Church for 25 years. Respitewood was the first respite home for the developmentally disabled in Monroe County. Even after retirement, he led the East Marion Community Church. He also loved fishing with his grandchildren. Clyde was preceded in death by wife Roxanna, and is survived by daughter Lucinda and Charissa, son Clyde, and eight grandchildren.

Marion M. (Abdill) Dunlavy ’49

Nov. 7, 2020—Marion and husband Myron Dunlavy Jr. '50 owned Lincoln Caverns in Huntingdon, Pa. It was a family business started by Myron’s father and mostly managed by daughter Patricia "Ann" Dunlavy ’76. Marion’s husband discovered Whisper Rocks, a major attraction at the cave. Marion remained active in the family business well into her later years. Marion spent a majority of her life in Mechanicsburg, Pa., where she and Myron owned and operated A-1 Lincoln Rent-All. Marion’s volunteer life was busy, serving the Huntingdon Presbyterian Church as secretary of the Women’s Association, Huntingdon’s Meals on Wheels, the Keystone Rental Association, the PA Cave Association, the PA Natural Living Conference, and was an honorary member of the National Cave Association. She was also a member of the Huntingdon Rotary Club, where she was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. Marion was preceded in death by mother Florence (Sohl) Abdill, Class of 1910, and husband Myron. She is survived by daughter Ann, son Bruce, and two grandsons.

L. Alson Bohn ’49

Dec. 15, 2020—Alson served in the United States Army during World War II. He worked for Citizens Bank and later worked as Vice President Trust Officer at Hagerstown Trust Co. “Al” loved collecting Lionel Trains, gardening, volunteering, and attending his grandchildren’s athletic and musical events. He was a member of the Waynesboro Church of the Brethren and was a part of the Christian Home Builders Sunday School Class. He was a member and volunteer for organizations such as Acacia Masonic Lodge #586, Continental Commandry of Chambersburg, Joe Stickell American Legion Post #15, Waynesboro Welfare Association, Antietam Cemetery, Southern District of Pa. Churches of the Brethren, and was a former board member of Brethren Home in New Oxford, Pa. Al was preceded in death by wife Jeanne, and is survived by daughters Nancy and Kathy, sons Jefry and Dale, and seven grandchildren.

Michael W. Bowser ’49

Dec. 13, 2020—After graduating from Juniata, Michael attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry where he was a member of the Mathew H. Cryer Honorary Oral Surgical Society. He completed his residency at Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force as Oral Surgeon during the Korean War. Michael later began a private practice of Oral Surgery in York, Pa. and later an Oral Surgery practice in the Soldiers and Sailors Hospital of Wellsboro. He was the founder of the York Oral Surgery Center and was an active staff member of the York Hospital, Memorial Hospital of York, as well as a consultant to the Hanover and Gettysburg Hospitals. He was an active member of many different dental societies. He was also an avid bow hunter and traveler and filmed his adventures in “Call of the Outdoors,” a TV program hosted by Harry Allaman from WGAL in Lancaster, Pa. He raised and trained bird dogs. He also had a passion for environmental and land preservation and was a founding board member of the North Central Pennsylvania Conservancy and the Pine Creek Headwaters Protection Group. He was also a pilot for most of his life and was a member of the Canyon Pilots Association. Michael was preceded in death by son Richard, brother Edward Bowser Jr. ’48, and is survived by wife Nancy, daughter Cynthia, sons Michael Jr. and David, and seven grandchildren including Brock Bowser ’01.

Jack C. Hallman ’49

Jan. 20, 2021—Before attending Juniata, Jack served on the U.S. Air Force as a B-17 radio operator and became Staff Sergeant with the 334th Squadron, 95th Bomb Group, Eighth Air Force during World War II. His aircraft was shot down during the war and he was a prisoner of war until Liberation Day in 1945. He later received his master’s degree in guidance at Penn State University. He became Assistant Director at Elmira College in Elmira, New York. He became the Supervisor of Reading for the Newark, Delaware Public School District and then the Director of Curriculum at the Indian River School District in Selbyville, Del. Jack was an active member of many organizations as well as his church. He held licenses for Eucharistic Visitors, Lay Reader, and Communion Assistant. He was preceded in death by first wife Mary; and is survived by wife Anne, daughters Elizabeth, Linda, Cathi, Cynthia, and Christy, and 12 grandchildren.

Mary A. (Musser) Lambert ’49

Dec. 7, 2020—Mary graduated from Juniata and went to work at Pennsylvania Extension Agency in Sullivan County, Pa. where she taught the women of the county home economics. She then ran Lambert Farms with her husband before substitute teaching in Shunk and Hillsgrove. Mary then went on to teach health at Sullivan County High School as well as working with the Sullivan County Children and Youth Agency. She also worked for the USDA Agricultural Statistics Services and actively participated with the Sullivan County Dairy Promotion Committee. She was a 4-H leader for more than 50 years and oversaw trips and softball games. She and her husband also hosted many exchange students through the IFYE Cultural Exchange program. Mary was also a key part in founding the Sullivan County Library where she was an early member of the Tuesday Book Club where they gathered books for the library. She was a member of St. Paul’s Church in Overton where she played the organ for many years. Mary was preceded in death by husband George, and is survived by daughters Susan and Ann, sons William and James, and 11 grandchildren.

Joseph L. Beyer ’50

Aug. 9, 2020—While at Juniata, Joseph broke cross country and track and field records and was active in the music programs on campus. After graduating, he worked as Juniata’s Assistant Director of Admissions. He then spent some time in the U.S. Army. He worked as a Human Resource Manager at Royal Insurance Co. in New York City and later the San Francisco office. He was an active member of the Calvary Presbyterian Church, leading groups and tours and singing in the choir. He enjoyed photography, skiing, and traveling with his wife. Joseph was preceded in death by brother George Beyer ’41, and is survived by wife Patty.

Lake S. Clemmer Sr. ’50

Nov. 13, 2020—Lake is survived by daughter Nancy (Clemmer) Gingrich ’79 and sister Rhoda (Clemmer) Gaugler ’53. He was a former member of Juniata’s Alumni Council and former Alumni Trustee.

Robert A. Lefever ’50

Nov. 6, 2020—Robert served in the U.S. Navy as an Electronic Technicians Mate during World War ll. After graduating from Juniata, he went on to earn his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was both a scientist and an inventor, publishing over 80 research papers and holding 17 U.S. and foreign patents. He also presented scientific papers as well as chaired sessions at national and international scientific conferences. Robert was a member of the American Chemical Society, American Physical Society, American Ceramic Society, the New York Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists, and was known in the Grand Junction community for his work as a volunteer. Robert was preceded in death by wife Juanita, and is survived by daughters Norma Jean and Janice, and son Allen.

Robert L. Mohr ’50

Dec. 20, 2020—Robert graduated from Juniata and then attended Temple School of Dentistry. After graduating, he served in the U.S. Navy for two years. He was an active member of St. Peters United Methodist Church and went on many missionary dental trips to South America and sang in the choir. He was a member and past president of the Rotary Club. Robert was preceded in death by son Robert, and is survived by wife Mary, daughters Jane and Barbara, sons Ric, Douglas, and Mark, and nine grandchildren.

Jay L. Benedict Jr. ’51

Sept. 25, 2020—After graduating from Juniata, Jay attended the Dickinson School of Law. He served in the Counter Intelligence Corps for the Army and was stationed in Korea. Later, he had his own law practice in Franklin County, Pa. He was a member and leader on many boards such as Chairman of the Board for both F&M Trust Company and Franklin Financial Services Corporation. He was a secretary and board member for both Guilford Water Authority and Guilford Township Authority, solicitor for the Guilford Township Supervisors, and member of the Guilford Township Planning Committee. He was an active member of his church, teaching Men’s Bible Class for over 40 years. He enjoyed going on cruises with his wife. Jay was preceded in death by wife Dorothy, and is survived by daughter Julie, son Jay, and grandchildren.

Clare M. (Nolan) Learn ’52

Jan. 23, 2021—Clare was an eligibility worker at the King George Department of Social Services and later worked as a secretary for the naval base at Dahlgren. She was also a member of Trinity United Methodist Church as a choir participant, chairperson of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee, and secretary of the Administrative Board. She enjoyed volunteering with the Red Cross at the Dahlgren Naval Base. She loved square dancing, the Elder Study program at the University of Mary Washington, water exercises at Dahlgren pool, and traveling. Clare was preceded in death by husband Robert Learn ’52 and son Paul, and is survived by son Timothy, and one granddaughter.

James S. Streiner ’52

Jan. 8, 2020—James turned his lifelong passion for writing into a career as a respected journalist when he began writing for the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph. He then wrote for the internal magazine for Gulf Oil. Upon his retirement, he began writing for newspapers in North Harris County. He was a volunteer who helped oversee community service work. He wrote a collection of poetry and fictional accounts of his hometown. James was preceded in death by wife Marietta, and is survived by son Timothy.

Esther V. (Weaver) Shoup ’52

Jan. 10, 2021—Esther was a home economist at State Extension service in Forest County, Pa. She later worked as a home economist teacher in Pennsylvania before moving to Connecticut. She earned her master’s degree in education and later became an extension home economist for Tolland County, Conn., before retiring. She was very involved in the Ellington Congregational Church, serving on church committees, and helped establish the Soup Kitchen at Union Congregational Church. She loved bird watching. She was preceded in death by husband Mahlon and sister Virginia (Weaver) Fegley ’48, and is survived by daughters Kimberly and Beth, son Richard, and nine grandchildren.

Vada Jean Roof ’54

Nov. 22, 2020—For two years, Vada taught at Fayette County Schools before teaching music at Redbank Valley until retirement. She also taught piano lessons and was the organist for the New Bethlehem Presbyterian Church and the St. Charles Catholic Church. She played for weddings and funerals and led a weekly Hymn Sing for the residents of Edgewood Heights Personal Care Home in New Bethlehem, Pa. She also volunteered at the Food Pantry and the Redbank Valley Thrift Shop. Vada enjoyed traveling, having visited all 50 states, 16 countries, and a few Canadian Provinces.

James D. Hunt ’56

Nov. 25, 2020—Jim graduated in June of 1956 and married his college sweetheart, Nan (Heller) Hunt '56, that same afternoon at Stone Church of the Brethren in Huntingdon, Pa., with Juniata’s President Calvert Ellis officiating. Jim began his professional journalism career at weekly newspapers in Clairton and Pittsburgh, Pa., before landing at the Daily News in Huntingdon, where he worked for 41 years, serving 16 years as managing editor and 14 years as editor. His passion for news started as sports editor of the Juniatian, the school newspaper, where he began a two-year stint as editor, one of which included the paper earning All-American honors. While a student, he also worked as a Juniata football statistician in the press box at Knox Stadium and continued well into his retirement from the Daily News, logging an impressive 45-year run in that role. He served as a journalism instructor at his alma mater and twice filled in as Interim Sports Information Director. Jim’s devotion to Juniata and his community were impressive. He served the Huntingdon Jaycees, Huntingdon Borough Council, Huntingdon County Business and Industry, Smithfield Township Economic Development Corporation (STEDCO), and Juniata College’s Alumni Council. He enjoyed traveling with his wife to all 50 states and visited several other countries. He was preceded in death by wife Nan, and is survived by daughter Cathy (Hunt) Sherman '81, son Douglas, brother Richard Hunt '68, and two grandchildren.

George C. Port ’56

Nov. 5, 2020—“Chal” volunteered to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he served in Germany as Battalion Supply Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 1955, receiving the Occupational Medal Germany, Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. Chal attended the Wharton’s School of Commerce, Philadelphia, Pa., and spent his career in the banking and insurance industries. He rose to branch manager at Girard Trust Bank, Philadelphia, Pa., and later purchased the Saunders Insurance Agency in Huntingdon, Pa. with his wife Mary Anne. His civic engagement included the McConnellstown Volunteer Fire Company, Huntingdon Kiwanis Club, Huntingdon Rotary Club, and Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed woodworking and hunting. Chal is survived by wife Mary Anne, daughters Kathleen and Beverly, son Charles, and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son Chip.

William H. Adams ’57

Nov. 21, 2020—Bill met his wife, Helen (Schmidlen) Adams ’57, at Juniata and earned a degree in Physical Chemistry. The two were married immediately after graduation. He served in the United States Army at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds during the Vietnam War. Bill spent 30 years at Armstrong Flooring in Lancaster, Pa., as a product development chemist. Bill was an avid volunteer for Juniata College and, in 1995, he and Helen were co-recipients of the H.B. Brumbaugh Alumni Service Award. During his retirement years, Bill enjoyed woodcarving, gardening, and playing Bridge; and his favorite pastime was fly-fishing. He was preceded in death by wife Helen and is survived by daughter Debra Adams ’81, son Kurt, and one grandson.

Susan I. (Peterson) Hurley ’57

Oct. 10, 2020—Susan worked for Union National Bank & Trust Company in Huntingdon, Pa. She then worked as a Loan Servicer and Administrative Assistant at Unitas National Bank, after they merged with Union National Bank & Trust Company. After a merger with First Commonwealth Bank, she worked in data processing and later as the Senior Development Support Coordinator. She was very involved in her community, in athletics, the library, and her church. Susan was involved in Huntingdon athletics to support her children. She was a member of the Huntingdon County Tax Collectors Association, Frank P. Hommon Post #24, American Legion Auxiliary, and a voting member of the Huntingdon County Sports Hall of Fame. She was an active member of her church, Huntingdon Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, where she was a participant of the Berean Class Sunday School, a teacher of the Sunday school and fellowship classes, and an auditor. Susan is survived by husband Edmund, sons Patrick, Timothy, and Matthew, and seven grandchildren.

Richard O. Wenger ’57

Dec. 22, 2020—After graduating from Juniata, Richard earned his master’s degree in engineering from Lehigh University. He then worked at Bethlehem Steel. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem. He enjoyed traveling, genealogy, Bible study, and was a fan of the Eagles and Phillies. Richard is survived by wife Yvonne, daughter Nancy, son David, and three grandchildren.

Charles S. Fox ’58

July 19, 2020—Charles received his master’s degree in Hospital Administration from Northwestern University after graduating from Juniata. Upon receiving his master’s, he worked as an assistant administrator at what was the Polyclinic Hospital in Harrisburg, Pa. He enjoyed collecting antique farm machinery and vehicles. He also loved music, playing in the choir for the Chambersburg Church of the Brethren. Charles is survived by his special friend Kathleen.

Maryln J. (Berkebile) Ignath ’58

Nov. 17, 2020—Maryln was a Retired Lifetime Career Educator in the Pittsburgh Public School System. She last taught in the Social Studies Department at North Hills High School. She was a member of the Stone Church of the Brethren in Huntingdon. Maryln was preceded in death by husband Robert, and sister Vivian (Berkebile) Van Vlack ’45.

Nancy J. (Phennicie) Moser ’59

Sept. 23, 2020—After graduating from Juniata, Nancy began work as a substitute teacher and then became a full-time teacher at Meyersdale Elementary School, Pa. After retirement, she continued to stay involved as a substitute teacher. She was an active member of her church, Meyersdale Church of the Brethren, playing as an organist and pianist as well as writing the Christmas and Easter cantatas. She was also an active participant of the Juniata Alumni Association, a former church trustee on Juniata’s Board of Trustees, and served on Juniata’s Church College Relations Council. She played saxophone for “Legend of the Magic Waters” and the Meyersdale and Somerset County Community Bands. She was preceded in death by father William Phennicie ’31 and husband Harvey; she is survived by sister Barbara (Phennicie) Albright ’56, daughter Bonnie, sons Jeffrey and Andrew Moser ’97, and seven grandchildren.

M. Lee Speck ’59

Oct. 29, 2020—Lee entered the United States Army during the Korean War before attending Juniata College. He worked in Huntingdon, Pa., first at Huntingdon Machine Company as comptroller and plant manager, and later in accounting at the John R. Wald Company. Active in his community, Lee volunteered with the Huntingdon Jaycees, Huntingdon Rotary Club, and United Way. He also served as a trustee at the Huntingdon Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed golfing with his wife Jeanne at the Huntingdon Country Club, restoring antique cars, and watching Penn State Football. Lee was preceded in death by brother Donald Speck ’57, and is survived by wife Jeanne, daughter Lee Anne, and two grandsons.

Sandra M. (Wilson) O’Rourke ’60

Dec. 12, 2020—After Juniata, Sandra graduated from the Harrisburg Hospital School of Nursing. She then worked at Harrisburg Hospital and was a nursing instructor at the DeLong School in Washingtonville. She loved giving back to her community as a Cub Scout Leader and Brownie and Junior Girl Scout Leader. She was the Montour County Heart Association chairperson and was president of the Geisinger Medical Center Auxiliary. Sandra co-chaired two fundraising community productions of Broadway-type shows. She started the Mission Committee at Grove Presbyterian Church. She was the chairperson for the Danville Area Food Bank. She also established the Jubilee Kitchen and co-chaired the Task Force for the Gate House. She began the Good Samaritan Crisis Fund, Furniture Fund, and the clothing arm of the Mission. She served as Parish at St. Joseph Catholic Church and started an active Peace and Social Justice Committee. She helped start many mission trips abroad with the Youth Heart Work Camp. She was also on the Maria Joseph Continuing Care Community Board. Sandra is survived by husband Terence, daughters Jennifer, Kelly, and Candace, sons Terence and Christopher, and 11 grandchildren.

Stephen P. Boyle ’61

Sept. 7, 2020—Steve started his career in Connecticut, working in the investment department at Connecticut Savings Bank. He later worked at Citytrust Bank as a Trust Investment Officer, an Executive Vice President, and a Chairman for the Trust Department. He then moved to Boston and was a Managing Director of Fiduciary and Investment Services at Choate Hall and Stewart LLP. Steve was an active participant in business and civic communities, non-profit boards, and a fan of UConn and University of Arizona Women’s basketball teams. He also loved to travel and sail. Steve is survived by wife Margorie, daughters Wendy, Hollie, Beth, Candace, Jenny, and 11 grandchildren.

Richard W. Fisher ’62

Nov. 27, 2020—Dick earned his master’s of education degree in comprehensive social studies at Indiana State College, Indiana, Pa. He began teaching at Chestnut Ridge High School in Fishertown, Pa., and taught American history, ancient civilizations, and world cultures for 38 years. He coached varsity football, varsity baseball, and was athletics director at Chestnut Ridge High School for a number of years. He was on multiple state and district athletic committees and was awarded State Athletic Director of the Year in 1994 as well as the National Athletic Director’s Award of Merit in 2001. In 2019, he was elected to the Bedford County Sports Hall of Fame. Both he and his wife were active members and leaders of their church, Pine Grove United Methodist Church. Richard is survived by wife Linda Marie.

James T. Harrington ’62

Sept. 5, 2020—“Terry” was a PFC in the Army National Guard of Pennsylvania and an Airman First Class of the Air National Guard Reserves. After graduating from Juniata, he received his master’s degree in education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He taught at his high school, Schott High School, in Pennsylvania, and later worked as a guidance counselor in the South Fayette School District. Terry was preceded in death by wife Jean, and is survived by sons Kevin and Terry, and four grandchildren.

David E. Henrie ’62

Dec. 31, 2020—David earned his Ph.D. in Inorganic-Physical Chemistry at Florida State University after graduating from Juniata. He was then a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Florida State University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. David was an instructor and Assistant Professor of Chemistry here at Juniata. He continued to teach as Lecturer in Chemistry at the University of North Carolina, Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Loyola College, and Temporary Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Bloomsburg State University. He was also an Analytical Chemist at Conrail Technical Services Laboratory in Altoona, Pa., and a Senior Chemist. David earned many awards including the Dupont Teaching Fellow from Florida State University, the Notable Americans Award from the American Biographical Institute, the Who’s Who in the East, and was recognized as one of the 2,000 Outstanding Scientists of the 20th Century. He loved music, was a jazz composer and performer, and copyrighted several compositions. David was preceded in death by wife MaryEllen and stepson Dalton and is survived by stepdaughter Tamara, and four step-grandchildren.

Samuel J. Peters ’62

Oct. 18, 2020—After graduating from Juniata, Samuel earned his master’s in education from Shippensburg University. He taught history and English in the Indian Valley School District as well as the Huntingdon Area School District. He loved watching football and taking walks. Samuel was a history buff and an avid volunteer for Huntingdon Meals on Wheels. He was an active member of the Huntingdon County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and his church, the Emmanuel Bible Church in Huntingdon. Samuel is survived by wife Faye, daughters Karen, Susan, Elizabeth, and seven grandchildren.

Robert Berthold Jr. ’63

Nov. 17, 2020—In addition to his degree from Juniata, Bob also earned degrees from Rutgers University and Penn State University. Bob, a/k/a “Doc,” taught biology, entomology, and apiculture. He shared his knowledge of beekeeping in workshops all over the world. He was an apiary inspector for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture for over a decade and authored articles on beekeeping and queen rearing, as well as a book titled “Beeswax Crafting.” Primarily a college professor and beekeeper, Bob was also a runner and star athlete, coaching cross-country and track at Delaware Valley College (now Delaware University), where he started the first women’s cross-country team. He took several of Del Val’s running teams to the MAC championships and was inducted into the Juniata College Sports Hall of Fame for his running achievements. He was a member of the Buck’s County Apiary Society, the Montgomery County Apiary Society, and the Eastern Apiculture Society. He had a lively, quirky sense of humor and enjoyed many hobbies, including candle making, tinsmithing, gardening, preserving food, traveling, and attending events. He and his wife established the Marren & Robert Berthold Endowed Scholarship and welcome donations to Juniata College in Bob’s memory. He is survived by wife Marren (Cummings) Berthold '65, daughter Heather (Berthold) Stearns '93, son Rob, and three grandchildren.

Terry L. Grove ’64

Dec. 5, 2020—After graduating from Juniata, Terry attended Bethany Theological School in Illinois where he received his Master of Divinity and Doctorate of Ministry. He then served at the Carson Valley Church of the Brethren and was a pastor for the Church of the Brethren in Pennsylvania, Washington, Indiana, and the United Church of Christ in Florida. For more than 20 years, he worked for Church World Service and CROP, opening offices in New Jersey and Florida. After retirement, he continued to work as District Executive of the Atlantic Southeast District Church of the Brethren. He was also an active member of the Boy Scouts, spending years as Scout Leader and serving on many committees that supported the Boy Scouts. He was awarded the God and Country Award, Eagle Scout Award, and the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award which he received from the National Eagle Scout Association. He also enjoyed golfing and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Terry is survived by wife Carol, sister Priscilla (Grove) Gibboney ’78, daughter Kelly, son Scott, and two grandchildren.

Ralph L. Heimbaugh ’64

Jan. 12, 2021—Ralph worked for Caterpillar for over 30 years, including time working abroad in Belgium. He was an active member of Grace Church in Morton. Ralph is survived by wife Donna, daughters Tara and Tiffany, son Jason, and seven grandchildren.

Gary C. Horner ’64

Dec. 29, 2020—Gary attended the Dickinson School of Law after graduating from Juniata and was a former senior partner at Spence, Custer, Saylor, Wolfe, and Rose Attorneys at Law. He was a leader of many organizations including former President and Solicitor of the Johnstown War Memorial, board member of Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, president of Sunnehanna Country Club, and founding board member of the Community Foundation of the Alleghenies. He was a former attorney for the General Counsel of the Canal Zone, Panama. He was athletic, enjoying running, baseball, softball, basketball, football, and track. Gary was preceded in death by wife Gretchen, and is survived by daughters Juli and Heidi, son Matthew, and four grandchildren.

Sandra L. (Jones) Caldwell ’64

March 6, 2020—Sandra graduated from Juniata and earned her master’s degree in counseling from the Philadelphia College of the Bible. She was a Medical Technologist at Abington Memorial Hospital. She loved gardening, quilting, and researching and investing in the stock market. Sandra was preceded in death by husband David, and is survived by daughter Jeanne, sons Lewis and Lynn, and nine grandchildren.

Caryl A. (Rinehart) Roach ’64

Aug. 2, 2020—Caryl worked as a teacher and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, where she was a Past Matron and District Deputy Grand Matron. She is survived by husband Kent, daughters Allison, Jennifer, Melissa, and six grandchildren.

Rebecca J. (Kaltenbaugh) Ickes ’65

Jan. 5, 2021—Becky was an Elementary School teacher for Conemaugh Township Area for over 30 years. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church of America. She loved gardening and was a member of many clubs such as the Johnstown Garden Club, Herb Society of America, American Horticultural Society, PA State Garden Club, and National Garden Club. She was a Penn State Master Gardner and an accredited Flower Show Judge. Rebecca is survived by husband Carl, sister Shelly Kaltenbaugh ’76, brother David Kaltenbaugh ’71, daughters Wendy and Missy, step-sons Edward and Douglass, and three grandchildren.

Alberta Y. (Haught) Goshorn ’66

Nov. 8, 2020—After Juniata, Alberta earned a master’s degree in Library Science from The University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pa. She worked at the Huntingdon County Library and the Altoona Library in Altoona, Pa. Alberta coauthored “Images of America: JC Blair Memorial Hospital, 100th Anniversary Commemorative Edition,” with Nancy Swigart Shedd. She was a member of Stone Church of the Brethren and served as a member of the Huntingdon County Historical Society. She enjoyed genealogy, writing, reading, crossword puzzles, and spending time with her cats. She is survived by husband Gene, stepson David, and step-daughters Sharon and Kelly Ann.

W. Cliff Bard Jr. ’68

Sept. 8, 2020—Cliff served in the U.S. Navy as an officer during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the National Accountants Association, later becoming Member of the Year as well as President. He was also a certified Personnel Recruiting Consultant. Later, he was a Vice President for Suntrust Bank in Florida. He is survived by wife Ann, sons Kevan and Justin, and two grandchildren.

Linda A. (Miller) Shultz ’68

Oct. 28, 2020—Linda taught third grade at the Alfarata Elementary School in Huntingdon for 30 years. She was dedicated to her students as well as her church, where she was an active member. She sang in the choir at the Trinity United Church of Christ, the Calvary Independent Baptist Church, and later at the Community Chapel of Hesston. Linda was preceded in death by brother Earnest Miller Jr. ’65, and is survived by husband Donald Shultz ’68, daughters Julie (Shultz) Martin ’12, and Tricia.

William A. Skelly ’69

Sept. 28, 2020—William was drafted into the U.S. Army after graduating and was a linguist and translator for 6 years. He then moved to Colorado where he earned a degree in geological engineering. He worked as a geological engineer in Colorado, then settled in Washington at the Hanford Nuclear Site. He is survived by brother Kenneth Skelly ’73, wife Ingrid, son David, and two grandsons.

Larry E. Brindle ’70

Dec. 25, 2020—Larry enlisted in the Army National Guard after graduating from Juniata. He later went to work at Miller Building Systems in Meyerstown, Pa. He was a former president of Cardinal Wrestling Club Boosters for 10 years. He enjoyed going on vacations with his family and golfing with his friends. Larry is survived by wife Joanne, daughters Jamie and Andrea, sons Grant, Kevin, and Garrett, and six grandchildren.

Jesse A. Dick ’70

Dec. 23, 2020—Before graduating from Juniata, Jesse served in the U.S. Army in Germany and completed the Signal Corps Equipment Repair Course. He was a member of the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Co., Juniata Valley Ambulance, and Petersburg Sportsman Club. He worked in the personnel department for the PA State Department of Corrections. Jesse is survived by daughters Julie and Janine, son Jason, and five grandchildren.

Salvatore A. Mercadante ’72

Jan. 1, 2021— “Merc” loved football, playing in high school and here at Juniata. He worked for Hershey Company before opening Merc’s Restaurant. He was a member of St. Therese de Liseux Roman Catholic Church and was chair of the athlete committee for the Uniontown High School Hall of Fame. Merc is survived by daughter Maria, son Matthew, and two grandchildren.

Clarence A. Fritz Jr. ’74

Dec. 4, 2020—After graduating from Juniata, Clarence moved to Florida where he earned five degrees. He later taught high school English as well as middle school math. He worked at IBM until retirement. Clarence is survived by wife Julie and sons Brian and Robbie.

John A. Knouse ’75

Jan. 9, 2021—John was very engaged in sustainability and community engagement. He spent a lot of time in Kansas City, Mo. working at Metro Parks, Jefferson County Memorial Forest, and was a member of Paddlewheel Alliance and Good Neighbor Food Co-op. He then moved to Athens, Ohio, and operated ventures including Earthrise Ovens, working at Athens Parks and Recreation, and led many volunteer efforts. He loved spending time outdoors. He was a science fiction writer, a music composer, and a political cartoonist. He studied biology, genealogy, cartography, and geology. John is survived by daughters Elizabeth and Rachel, and two grandchildren.

Lee A. Flinner ’76

Nov. 17, 2020—After Juniata, Lee graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Dental School. He practiced dentistry in Windber, Pa. shortly before opening a practice in Gettysburg, Pa., where he practiced for 39 years. Lee served as a President of the Hanover Dental Society and was a member of the Adams County Dental Oral Health Study Club for 37 years. Lee loved going on dental service trips to Honduras, and was proud of the 15 missions that he went on. He was also a Trustee and Deacon for the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church. Lee enjoyed reading, being outdoors, and traveling with his wife. He also enjoyed car collecting and teaching high-performance driving. Lee is survived by wife, Mary (Stauffer) Flinner ’76, daughter Kate, son Luke, and two grandchildren.

March 28, 2020—Carol worked at PNC Bank at Caste Village Shoppes in Orlando, Fla., and was a well-known presence. Carol is survived by husband Joseph.

Thomas B. Hale ’77

Jan. 3, 2021—Thomas served in the U.S. Marine Corps after graduating from Juniata. He later worked as a supervisor in the Department of General Services for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He had worked as an analytic chemist. He was also an amateur radio operator and was a member of the Harrisburg Amateur Radio Club. He loved the outdoors, growing fruit for pies, hiking through state parks, and was a member of Valleys Evangelical Covenant Church. Thomas is survived by wife Ann, stepsons Terry and Andrew, and six grandchildren.

James M. Masood ’77

Oct. 24, 2020—After graduation, Jim held management and executive positions in the food industry, working for Rite Aid Wholesale Food, McCain Citrus, the Red Wing Company, Fieldbrook Foods, and Wells Enterprises. He took his responsibilities seriously, but had a witty sense of humor. He instilled confidence, trust, and loyalty wherever he went. Jim enjoyed golfing, beach vacations with his family, and spending time with his canine companions. He is survived by wife Ann, daughter Kristen, son Eric, and sister Lisa (Masood) Giles ’82.

Jan. 2, 2021—David worked for Owens Corning, then for General Electric Company, and later for IBM where he was marketing manager. He loved the outdoors, riding motorcycles, gardening, hiking, and traveling. David is survived by wife Pam and daughters Katherine and Aida.

Aug. 29, 2020—David worked at Penn State University in the information technology department and loved going to Juniata’s Raystown Field Station each spring to make maple syrup. He enjoyed playing Dungeons and Dragons, online gaming, and making fires for maple sugaring, where he took charge of the sugar shack, working with close friend and field station director, Chuck Yohn ’83. He is survived by wife Julie, mother Jean (Lockhart) Blair ’55, and children Corey and Maggie.

Jeffrey R. Ostrowski ’84

Nov. 21, 2020—After graduating from Juniata, Jeff studied at Thomas Jefferson University School of Physical Therapy. He later co-founded Excel Physical Therapy in Philadelphia. After the company merged and became E&A Therapy Inc., Jeff became Managing Partner to 35 Excel clinics in the Philadelphia area. Jeff was an active member in his field, serving as the Southeast District Director of the Pennsylvania Physical Therapy Association and the Director of the American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) Private Practice Section (PPS). He was an adjunct professor at Drexel University and an editor of IMPACT Magazine for APTA PPS. He was awarded the 2019 PPTA Service Award. Jeff was an avid outdoorsman and passionate about fitness. He was a big fan of his children’s collegiate athletic careers. Jeff enjoyed dinner parties with friends and New York Times crossword competition with his brothers. Jeff is survived by wife Margaret "Peggy" Evans ’85, daughter Carly, and son Curtis.

Oct. 13, 2020—After graduating from Juniata, Sheila earned her master’s degree in Botany and Genetics from Duke University. She helped develop Wyoming science teaching standards. She loved knitting, hiking, cooking, celebrating Christmas, and being outdoors. Sheila is survived by Rick, her daughters Rachael and Sarah, and sons Noah and Micah.

Jan. 11, 2021—Valerie served in the U.S. Air Force and attended the Defense Language Institute where she studied Chinese and Russian. She later worked as a social worker in Pennsylvania and taught in elementary schools in Sacramento, Ca. Valerie loved animals and traveling.

Lola (DeForrest) Johnson ’95

Dec. 18, 2020—Lola taught kindergarten at Shirley Township Elementary School. She loved to tell stories about her childhood on the DeForrest farm. She enjoyed going to auctions and yard sales to search for antiques. She liked collecting pottery, antique purses and pins, and enjoyed the ocean and trips abroad. She also loved animals and donated to many animal causes. Lola is survived by husband Raymond, sons Eric and Greg, and six grandchildren.

Susanne (Baumann) Aurand ’97

Nov. 24, 2020—Susanne taught German for the State College School District. She loved being active outdoors, from horseback riding to kayaking, as well as traveling and helping others. She was a member of the Grace Covenant Church. Susanne founded the PA Youth Ranch where she was able to share her love of faith, horses, and serving others. Susanne is survived by husband David and daughters Anna and Sophia.

Jared M. Flick ’16

Nov. 15, 2020—Jared loved traveling and music, especially jazz. Throughout high school and college, he played the trombone in many ensembles and was able to perform in the United States and abroad. During high school, he spent a year in Germany, where he fell in love with the people, language, and culture. He also spent a semester abroad in Germany during his time at Juniata, while interning at a logistics consulting firm in Bonn, Germany. After graduating from Juniata, Jared worked for GEICO as a Rate Product Implementation Administrator and had earned his first professional designation-AINS-Associate in General Insurance designation. He was a member of the Richfield United Church of Christ. Jared is survived by parents Jeffrey and Lori Jane, and sister Lindsey.

Nia D. Smith ’16

Jan. 30, 2021—Nia was an avid writer and musician. She wrote in many genres and was an accomplished jazz musician. She worked as a Neuro Rehabilitation Assistant for Acadia Health in Lancaster, Pa. Nia was a member of the Mount Joy Mennonite Church and was involved in the youth group, youth worship team, and mission trips. She also loved film, arts, painting, cross-stitch, animals, and was a self-proclaimed food critic. Nia is survived by parents Gregg and Sheila, and brother Christian.

Frances I. (Helms) Carmichael

Dec. 1, 2020—Frances was an advocate for education for women. She was the Dean of Women at Juniata as well as the University of Tulsa, Okla., and the University of Georgia. While at Juniata, she was also an instructor in Psychology. During her time at the University of Georgia, she was an active member of the University Women’s Club, Bobbin Mill Garden Club, the Red Cross, Rotary, and First Presbyterian Church. Frances was preceded in death by husband Joseph.

Vincent Inzerillo

Dec. 31, 2020—Vince coached football at Juniata as well as Mifflin County High School. He was a member of the Decatur Athletic Association and was inducted into the Aston Sports Hall of Fame. He was also a member of many civic boards. Vince also owned and operated Vince’s Pizza in Burnham, Pa., and a second location in Beaver Springs. Vince was preceded in death by wife Carla, and is survived by daughter Desiree, son Vincent Jr., and five grandchildren.

Nora K. Suba

Dec. 2, 2020—Nora worked at Juniata for many years. She loved reading and solving puzzles. She was a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Hank Williams. She was also a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Huntingdon. Nora was preceded in death by husband John, and is survived by daughters Joan, Heather, Julia, Kathy, Patricia, son David, and six grandchildren.

Bonnie I. Willey

Oct. 12, 2020—Bonnie was a Lecturer in Education at Juniata. She taught in New York and North Carolina and was proud of her time in the South in the early ’70s teaching in newly integrated schools, where she championed equality in education. Bonnie volunteered with the United Nations Association of Centre County and First Book and was recognized by “State College the Magazine” in June of 2000 as one of Pennsylvania’s Teachers of the Year. Bonnie is survived by husband Jere, daughter Savonn, son Bill, and three grandchildren.
