Important Notes

  • Strongly recommend microbiology, comparative anatomy, physiology, Calculus II, biochemistry and molecular biology. Also recommend computers, genetics, arts, American culture, minorities, foreign language (especially Spanish), sociology, business courses, communication courses, and ethics.
  • This course list reflects our agreement with LECOM. Although this course list will be sufficient for most programs, make sure to check requirements of other schools in which you are interested no later than your sophomore year.
  • This course list does NOT represent a POE, nor does it cover College requirements. Design a POE, preferably in an academic area, in consultation with your advisor.
  • Make sure to have an advisor on the Health Professions Committee who specializes in Pre-Pharmacy, preferably Dr. Peter Baran.
  • In addition to your course work you are urged to gain some experience in pharmacy either during the school year or over the summer.

Competitive Credentials

3+3 and 3+4 students MUST be identified by the beginning of their sophomore year and 4+3 and 4+4 students by the beginning of their junior year. 3+ and 4+ students must have at least a 3.5 high school GPA and 1170 on the Math and Verbal sections of the SAT or a 26 on the ACT AND satisfactorily pass a professional interview at LECOM before being admitted to the pre-professional part of the program at Juniata. Juniata overall GPA must be 3.4 or higher and science GPA of 3.2 or higher with prerequisite course grades of C or better. Transfer students must complete at least 2 consecutive years at Juniata.

ALL APPLICANTS- accelerated and regular
LECOM accepts ONLY U.S. citizens and permanent residents. LECOM accepts AP credits for all subjects as long as a score of 4 or 5 is achieved. The PCAT is optional (but recommended). LECOM requires a secondary application, an on-site personal interview and requires a criminal background check be done by Certiphi as part of the PharmCAS application process. LECOM requires completion of the PharmCAS and supplemental applications by January 1st of the year prior to the year of matriculation (i.e. the student's last year at Juniata). Prerequisites should be completed by the end of the fall semester of the student's last year at Juniata, but if not, the student can be conditionally accepted if some course work remains to be completed in their final spring semester.

3+3 and 3+4 applicants should take at least 14 credit hours per term. Accelerated applicants will be disqualified from the program if their cumulative total GPA or science GPA falls below 3.0 for two consecutive semesters. Accelerated applicants may apply to other schools but MUST attend Lake Erie College of Pharmacy if accepted. LECOM wants no summer course work unless extenuating circumstances (LECOM permission required in consultation with Dr. Debra Kirchhof-Glazier). Up to 8 credits of prerequisite college-level courses transferred in at freshman year from another institution may count but cannot be used to reduce the course load. Up to 5 spots are reserved for Juniata students each year for accelerated programs. If an accelerated applicant fails to take the PCAT, they must take a writing skills assessment. Applicants must decide on the campus they wish to attend no later than the year before matriculation and indicate that site on their PharmCAS application.

Minimum overall GPA to apply for regular LECOM applicants is 2.7. No minimum PCAT scores. Competitive credentials for Pharm.D. at most other schools are 3.0 minimum GPA (recommend 3.4) and PCAT of 200 or better in each section.

NOTE: LECOM Pharmacy School also has a 4 year Distance Education Pathway involving their Bradenton, Florida campus.

Non-bolded courses are either offered in both semesters or represent open-ended choices, making them more flexible in when they can be taken. If you do an accelerated program plan to finish most or all of the prerequisite courses the year before your final year at Juniata. If you have one or two courses to complete your final year at Juniata, you could be conditionally accepted to professional school based on your academic record up to that point and on successful completion of the remaining prerequisite courses.

If you study abroad the SAFEST strategy is to take ALL prerequisite courses for professional school in the U.S., which may require you to take courses in the U.S. over the summer, preferably at a 4 year institution. However, if this is extremely difficult for your situation, check with the professional schools you wish to attend to see if they will accept courses taken abroad and if so, get their response in writing. Also if you have a Biology POE and will not have BI 207 by the time you go abroad, check with the Biology Department to see if there is a Cell and Molecular course you can take abroad that will enable you to take upper level biology offerings at Juniata your senior year that require BI 207 (ex. Physiology, Immunology, and Microbiology)

Be mindful of your POE courses, which are NOT indicated here. For example, if you have a Biology POE, you will need to take Freshman seminar the spring of your freshman year, Frontiers of Biology the fall of your sophomore year, and Biology 207 at your earliest opportunity after completing Introduction to Inorganic Chemistry.
