Primary Role

Develops and coordinates the Library's instruction program, creates innovative and effective approaches to strengthening student information literacy skills, cultivates strong working relationships with faculty, and explores and applies new technologies to enhance the research and learning experiences of our students.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists students and faculty by providing reference and research assistance at reference desk, by phone and by e-mail. Reference desk hours, including weekends and evenings, as assigned.
  • Coordinates and evaluates the library's information literacy program.
  • Be an important part of a team of other librarians creating and delivering a variety of tools to help build information literacy, critical-thinking, and media literacy skills among the student body.
  • Development of electronic Subject Resource Guides.
  • Plans and presents instructional workshops and classroom presentations on library use and reference resources including on-line and internet searching, bibliographic instruction and other reference topics.
  • Recommends print and electronic resources to be added to the library's collection.
  • Handles reference requests from the public.
  • Develops appropriate innovative and technologically advanced pedagogical methods for reference and instruction areas.
  • Reviews professional literature and keeps abreast of latest advances in librarianship.
  • Looks for professional development opportunities.
  • Works with staff to provide archival and special collections services.
  • Library liaison to designated academic departments.
  • Other duties as assigned and accepted.

Supervision Required/Given

Works independently within established guidelines. Must work collaboratively, collegially and cooperatively with diverse individuals and groups. Reports to the Library Director.

Position Qualifications

  • Knowledge and abilities acquired through a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science.
  • Demonstrated experience in an academic library environment sufficient to reveal competency and capability to work at a very competitive liberal arts college.
