HUNTINGDON, PA. -- Two Juniata College students have been chosen to receive the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Students selected for this scholarship are chosen based on academic merit from the fields of mathematics, science and engineering.

Leslie Vogt, a junior from Venice, Fla. and the daughter of Christopher and Christine Vogt, is studying chemistry at Juniata College. She will apply the $7,500 scholarship to tuition for her senior year at Juniata.

Caitlan Zlatos, a sophomore from Crownsville, Md. and the daughter of Laura and John Zlatos, is studying geology and environmental science at Juniata. She will apply her $7,500 scholarship toward her tuition for her junior and senior year.

Vogt and Zlatos were chosen from a field of 1,113 students from 477 colleges and universities. About 300 scholarships are awarded each year.

The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency established by Public Law 99-661 in 1986. The scholarship program honoring the late Sen. Barry M. Goldwater was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, natural sciences and engineering.

Leslie Vogt has been part of a chemistry research team since her sophomore year. She worked with Paul Schettler, professor of chemistry, on a project that used computer modeling to predict chemical separation in gas chromatography. She recently presented her research at the national American Chemical Society Conference in Anaheim, Calif., and will make presentations later this year at Enviroanalysis 2004 in Toronto, Canada and at the International Symposium on Capillary Chromatography in Riva del Garda, Italy.
She is a member of the Environmental Science Society and has served as co-president since 2002. She also is vice president of the pep band and has played in the Juniata Wind Symphony for three years. She also is a member of the Chemistry Club and the Society of Physics Students.
She received a Juniata Nomination Scholarship for the Arts and the Charles C. Ellis Memorial Scholarship.
Caitlan Zlatos has participated in several water quality research projects during her time at Juniata. During the 2003-2004 school year she was a student researcher for a water-quality monitoring project along Spruce Creek, one of Pennsylvania?s most renowned trout streams. She will continue her research on Spruce Creek and a tributary, Warriors Mark Run Creek, this summer.

She is a member of the Women?s Lacrosse Club and the Recycling Committee, serving as treasurer for both organizations. She also is a member of the Geological Society of America, the Conservation Club and the Environmental Science Society. Next year she will study abroad at the University of Otago in New Zealand.
