MEN?S VOLLEYBALL (15-6, 7-5 EIVA Tait): April 16-17 at Molten Division III Championships.

Juniata claimed its second consecutive EIVA Division III Championship in executing a 3-2 win over Springfield in the semifinals and then topping NYU 3-1 in the championship match. Winning the championship gave Juniata an automatic berth in next weekend?s Molten Division III Championship. Brian Dinning (Penn Hills/Pittsburgh) was named the tournament most valuable player for his efforts in the Juniata victories. Dinning pounded out 22 kills along with five aces in the win over Springfield, then followed it up with 15 kills, two aces, nine digs and five blocks in the championship match. Setter Ricky Ziegler (Northeastern/Manchester) was picked for the all-tournament team as he passed out 66 assists in the semifinal with six digs and three blocks then added 49 assists seven digs and five blocks against NYU. Libero Tim Cole (Pennsbury/Yardley) also nabbed all-tournament team honors as he led Juniata in digs with 12 and 15 against Springfield and New York respectively.

Also against Springfield Kenny Eiser (Central Bucks West/Doylestown) recorded 14 kills along with seven digs and five blocks. Ryan Genova (Antietam/Reading) was in double figures with 12 kills and added 10 digs. Glenn DeHaven (Walt Whitman/South Huntington, N.Y.) added 10 digs as well, and Cordt Withum (Penn Manor/Holtwood) led the team with seven blocks. Against NYU Eiser notched 14 kills while adding nine blocks. Genova again was in double figures with 14 kills and added six digs and seven blocks. Withum led the team with four aces and matches Eiser with nine blocks.

SOFTBALL (12-7, 3-5 Commonwealth): April 12 vs. Elizabethtown*; April 14 at Seton Hill; April 17 at Widener*.
*Commonwealth game.

Juniata was 1-3 on the week earning a doubleheader split against non-conference foe Gettysburg, and losing a pair of close games to Moravian College, the top-ranked team in Division III. Lizzie Bartosik (Penn/Granger, In.) was 1-0 on the week in two appearances and posted a 1.91 earned run average. Renae Hobbs (Mount Union/Mount Union) dropped both her starts on the week, but put together a solid ERA of 3.00. Hobbs also paced Juniata?s offense with three hits in seven at-bats and a team-high two runs scored. Becky Herr (Hamburg/Hamburg), Allison D?Ambrosia (State College/Boalsburg) and Amy Gable (Kennard-Dale/Stewartstown) all also recorded three hits during the week. Gable also joined Jen Piston (Central Bucks East/Jamison) with a team-high two runs driven in.

BASEBALL (12-7, 6-2 Commonwealth): April. 13 at Mt Aloysius; April 14 at Albright*;
April 18 at Lebanon Valley(2)*. *Commonwealth Conference game.

Weather kept the Eagles off the field with the exception of a 13-7 loss in a single game against conference foe Lebanon Valley. Juniata had five players with two hits in the game. Walt Goedkoop (Manheim Township/Lancaster) was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Darren Hake (Red Lion/Red Lion) 2-for-4 with an RBI while Will Russell (Tyrone/Tyrone) was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Zach Sternberg (McCaskey/Lancaster) and Matt Garner (Bellwood-Antis/Bellwood) were both 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Troy Beaver (Bellwood-Antis/Bellwood) paced the team with two RBI.

MEN?S TENNIS (2-5, 2-4 Commonwealth): April 13 at Susquehanna*; April 15 vs. Pitt-Greensburg.
*MAC Commonwealth match.

The Eagles fell in four tight matches during the week, losing to Albright, Penn State-Altoona and Elizabethtown 5-2 and dropping a tight 4-3 decision against Messiah. Against Penn State-Altoona, Neil Eicher (Aloona/Altoona) and Satoshi Kimura (L.B. Pearson College (Calif.)/Nasano, Japan) earned singles victories. Against Messiah Eicher won again at the top singles spot, while Scott Noerr (Lewistown/Lewistown) and Brandon Long (Lebanon/Lebanon) also posted singles wins. Jack Walfish (Spring-Ford/Royersford) had Juniata?s lone singles win against Elizabethtown. Finally against Albright Noerr won his singles match at the number five position.

TRACK AND FIELD: April 17 at Messiah Invitational.

Juniata competed in a pair of meets on the week. The Eagle women earned an 83-79 victory over Pitt-Johnstown in a dual meet. Then both Eagle squads competed at the Bucknell Outdoor Classic. Against Pitt-Johnstown Juniata posted eight first-place finishes in the meet and also had seven runner-up finishes. Meredith Troutman (Meyersdale/Meyersdale) placed first in both the 200 and 400 meter dashes. Nancy Hayes (Westminster/Westminster, Md.) broke her own school record in the 3,000 meters as she finished the event in a time of 11:10.60 which was good for first place. Also claiming a victory in a running event was Stefanie Rynkewitz (Lewistown/Lewistown) who earned a victory in the 100 meters. The Eagles also placed first in the 4x100 meter relay. In the field events Kira Troutman (Line Mountain/Valley View) placed first in the shot put. Andrea Denkovich (Greencastle-Antrim/Greencastle) earned a win in the discus and Stephanie Wasylyk (Honesdale/Uniondale) placed first in the pole vault.

On the first night of competition at Bucknell Justin Fritzius (Central York/York) topped the previous school record in the 5,000 meters with his time of 16:09.98. The time was good enough to finish 14th in the second section of the men?s 5,000. The previous record in the event was 16:15.85 and was established in 1992. Mike Vella (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) placed 22nd in the second section with a time of 16:57.07. Robin Cordier (St. Jude/Bailleul, France) and Mike Chirdon (Riverview/Verona) notched times of 17:16.91 and 17:27.65 respectively in the event.

On the women?s side after breaking the school record in the 10,000 and 3,000-meter runs in her last two competitions Hayes broke yet another school record this time in the 5,000 meters. Hayes covered the distance in a time of 18:35.80 which clipped more than 14 seconds of the previous record which was set in 1983. Hayes placed ninth in the 5,000 at the meet. Right behind her was Katey Glunt (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) who placed tenth with a time of 18:36.00. Sarah Bay (Central Dauphin/Harrisburg) finished the race in a time of 20:18.40. Rounding out the competition for the Eagles was Lauren Gates (Bishop Guilfoyle/Altoona) who logged a time of 42:35.04 in the 10,000 meters. On the second day at Bucknell the Eagle women set a new program standard in the 4x400-meter relay as the team finished second in the event with a time of 4:03.12 which topped the previous record of 4:03.91 which was set last fall. Sophomore Meredith Troutman put her name in the record books as she tied Juniata?s existing record in the 400-meter hurdles. Troutman placed fifth in the event, coming home in a time of 1:05.56 which tied the record which was established in 2000. Kira Troutman continued her string of strong performances as she placed first in the javelin with a throw of 131? 2?. Also with a strong showing was Rynkewitz who placed fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 58.59. Carol Longnecker (Harrisonburg/Harrisonburg, Va.) placed seventh in the 3,000 for Juniata while her Eagle teammates Carla Kifer (Sheffield/Sheffield), Lia Bella (Morris Catholic/Rockaway, N.J.) and Meghan Fahy (Brandywine/Wilmington, De,) were right behind her in eighth, ninth and tenth place respectively. Christina Jones (Fallston/Bel Air, Md.) rounded out the top-10 finishes as she finished 10th in the 1,500. For the men Adam Loser?s (Central York/York) jump of 6? 2? was good enough for a fourth-place finish which was tops on the men?s side. Chris Sheaffer (Central York/York) placed fourth in the third section of the 800 with Jason Freeman (Thornton/Thornton, Co.) and Jeremy Lampert (Portsmouth/Portsmouth, N.H.) right behind him. Shawn Miller (Altoona/Altoona) cleared 13? in the pole vault which earned him eighth place rounding out the top finishes for the Eagle men.
