FOOTBALL (1-3, 1-2 MAC): Oct. 11 vs. Lebanon Valley*.

Coming off a bye week Juniata dropped a 45-14 decision on the road at Susquehanna. The Eagles looked poised for a battle in the second half as they trailed by just three points heading into the locker room. Greg Troutman (Meyersdale/Meyersdale) had his best game of the season completing 20 of 43 passes for season-best 256 yards and a touchdown pass. John Boyer (Indian Valley/Belleville) led the team with seven catches for 78 yards. Tom Kimmel (South Range/Canfield, Ohio) had 52 yards and a touchdown catch. Gery Miceli (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) had a team-high 81 receiving yards. Juniata also got a big effort in the return game from Kurht Engle (Spring-Ford/Royersford) had an 88-yard kick-off return for a touchdown, the first time since the 1995 season that the Eagles have returned a kick for a score. He added a 68-yard return to start the second half, giving the team great field position. For the game, Engle had three returns for 166 yards and a score. Defensively Matt Garner (Bellwood-Antis/Tyrone) led the team with 12 total tackles while forcing a fumble and defending a pass. Brett Merrell (Danville/Danville) had seven stops, one for a loss along with a fumble recovery and an interception. Steve Parsons (Blackhawk/Beaver Falls) also had seven tackles. Adam Black (Huntingdon/Huntingdon) had a tackle for a loss for the blue and gold, as did Paul Kozick (Trinity/Dillsburg) who made six tackles.

WOMEN?S SOCCER (4-7, 0-2 Commonwealth): Oct. 9 vs. Susquehanna*; Oct. 11 at Wilkes.

Juniata posted another big win on the week, along with a tough one-goal loss. Juniata topped Mount Aloysius by an 11-0 score. It was a huge game for sophomore Nikki McLellan (Parkland/Hanover) who scored three goals and added four assists for 10 points in the game. Amy Tyler (Altoona/Altoona), Sarah Lester (Thomas Jefferson/Jefferson Hills) and Alison Kampstra (Chambersburg/Chambersburg) each had a pair of goals in the victory. Erinn Harter (Penn Trafford/Trafford) and Desiree Wagner (Harbor Creek/Erie) scored the final two goals for Juniata. Janine Smeltz (Line Mountain/Herndon), Emily Endres (Warren/Warren) and Emily Miller (Penns Valley/Coburn) all got in the scorebook with assists. Lindsey Treon (Hollidaysburg/Duncansville) made one save in the match. Against Pitt-Greensburg Tyler notched Juniata?s only goal as the Eagles fell by a 2-1 score. McLellan assisted on Tyler?s goal. Tyler and McLellan lead the Juniata team in goals and assists with six and five respectively. Treon (Hollidaysburg/Duncansville) made three saves for Juniata.

FIELD HOCKEY (7-4, 2-1 Commonwealth): Oct. 7 vs. Frostburg; Oct. 9 at Elizabethtown*;
Oct. 11 at Washington & Lee; Oct. 12 at Bridgewater. *Commonwealth Conference match.

One win and one loss on the week for the Juniata College field hockey team, as they topped Washington and Jefferson by a 7-0 score, then fell 2-1 on the road against Houghton. Grace McCluskey (West Perry/Elliotsburg) had a hat trick in the win, and Joanna Acri (East Pennsboro/Enola) had a goal and two assists. Betsy Kusniez (Boyertown/Gilbertsville), Dana Groff (Solanco/Quarryville) and Sarah Bender (Eastern York/York) each had a single goal in the win. Billie Rickenbaugh (East Juniata/McAlisterville) had two assists for Juniata while Jean Silvey (Red Lion/Airville) and Alison Holst (Greater Latrobe/Greensburg) each had one assist. Melonie Sappe? (Dallas/Shavertown), Andrea Way (Fair Haven Union/Fair Haven, Vt.) and Elizabeth Carter (Greensburg-Salem/Greensburg) all saw time in goal in the win for the Eagles.

WOMEN?S VOLLEYBALL (21-0, 3-0 Commonwealth): Oct. 8 at Messiah*;
Oct. 10-11 at Emory (Ga.) National Invitational. *Commonwealth Conference match.

Juniata remained unbeaten on the season as they claimed a 3-0 conference win over Moravian, and then topped four teams at the ASICS Collegiate Invitational. The Eagles, who are ranked first in the American Volleyball Coaches Association, did not drop a game on the week. Sophomore middle hitter Katie Laucks (West York/York) enjoyed a stellar week with 55 kills and an outstanding .495 hitting percentage. She also added a team-high 11 blocks and five serve aces. Katie Charles (Manheim Township/Lancaster) was also a force for Juniata as she led the team with 59 kills on the week with a .284 hitting percentage. She also recorded 36 digs and a team-high 10 aces. Freshman Stephanie Kines (Towson/Towson, Md,) was third on the unit with 35 kills and an excellent .443 attack percentage. She added eight blocks defensively. Setter Carli Dale (Cochranton/Cochranton) passed out 172 assists along with 43 digs and 16 kills. There was also another milestone passed for senior libero Johanna Holtan (Fargo North/Fargo, N.D.) recorded her 2,000th career assist during the final day of the ASICS Tournament. Holtan had 62 digs for the week, giving her 2,018 digs for her career. She is second all-time in Juniata history in career digs. Melissa Berdine (Pine-Richland/Gibsonia) tossed out 36 assists and added 19 digs. Danielle Hart (Central/Roaring Spring) notched 33 kills along with 22 digs. Lindsey Habel (Glen Oak/Canton, Ohio) did some of everything for Juniata with 20 kills, 32 digs and five blocks.

MEN?S AND WOMEN?S CROSS COUNTRY: Oct. 11 at Carnegie Mellon Invitational
The Juniata men?s and women?s cross country teams had solid showings at the Dickinson Invitational. The meet follows an unusual format in which the women can run in either a 4 or 8k race, while the men can compete in a 6 or an 8k. The Juniata men raced to a 12th-place finish out of 19 schools, while the women, who were missing several of their usual top finishers, placed 13th out of 17 squads. In the women?s 6K Katey Glunt (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) led the unit with a 39th-place finish. Christina Jones (Fallston/Bel Air, Md.) and Carla Kifer (Sheffield/Sheffield) rounded out the race with 118th and 156-place finishes respectively. In the women?s 4K run Stefanie Rynkewitz (Lewistown/Lewistown) led Juniata in the 4k run when she crossed the line 27th. Lauren Gates (Bishop Guilfoyle/Altoona) and Carol Longnecker (Harrisonburg/Harrisonburg, Va.) were 79th and 86th respectively for Juniata. Then Kara Donohue (Wynesboro/Waynesboro) and Linda Maus (Woodland Hills/Pittsburgh) rounded out the top-five for Juniata as they placed 166th and 167th in the race.For the men in the 4K Justin Fritzius (Central York/York) paced the Juniata men?s squad in the 4K race with his 29th-place finish. Less than four seconds behind him was Mike Vella (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) who finished 36th. Will Cantara (West Branch/Winburne) finished 53rd for Juniata, while Josh Leasure (Mount Lebanon/Pittsburgh) just snuck inside the top-100 with his 98th-place finish. Jeremy Lampert (Portsmouth/Portsmouth, N.H.) completed Juniata?s top-five when he crossed the line in 110th place. In the men?s 8K Chris Sheaffer (Central York/York) led the men when he finished 100th in the longer race. Jason Freeman (Thornton/Thornton, Co.) ran home in 143rd place while Adam Loser (Central York/York) was 203rd in the event. Justin Kanter (Moon/Moon Township) was 217th and Jim Serfass (Wellsboro/Wellsboro) rounded out the top-five when he came across 233rd.


WOMEN?S TENNIS (3-8, 2-4 MAC): Oct. 6 vs. Messiah;
*MAC Opponent.

The Eagles topped conference opponent Albright in a road match on the week by a 6-3 score. Lindsey Dipaola (Cumberland Valley/Mechanicsburg) and Molly Coursey (Westminster/Hanover) earned a win at the number one doubles position. The pair also each claimed a singles win, as did Stephanie Shaver (Central Cambria/Ebensburg), Deborah Mensch (Salisbury/New Tripoli) and Liz Ghebreselassie (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg). The Eagles took five of six singles matches in the win.

Juniata played one match on the week, and suffered a 4-1 set-back at the hands of York. Kyle Dunn (Central Bucks-East/Warrington) scored the lone goal for Juniata as he cut the deficit to 4-1 late in the game. Starting goalkeeper Mark Guthridge (DuBois/DuBois) played the first half and made three saves while surrendering two goals. Tim Penrod (Moravia/Moravia, N.Y.) made two stops in the second half.
