BASEBALL (13-14-1, 6-6 Commonwealth): Apr. 24, Indiana (Pa.) (2); Apr. 26 at Penn State-Altoona (2);

Apr. 28 at Susquehanna (2).

The Eagles opened the past week by losing both games of a doubleheader to visiting Division II Pitt-Johnstown, 11-7 and 8-2, on Thursday. In the first tilt, senior left fielder Fred Heaton (Central/Roaring Spring) went 2 for 4, while junior first baseman Tim Dobson (Millville/Millville, NJ) was 1 for 3 with one run scored, two RBI and a triple. Senior right fielder Lucas Kelleher (Bishop Guilfoyle/Altoona) scored two runs for Juniata. In the second contest with the Mountain Cats, the Eagles were limited to just two hits. Senior center fielder Matt Eisenberg (Big Spring/Newville) was 1 for 3 with a run scored, while Kelleher went 1 for 3 with a run scored as well. On Saturday, Juniata journeyed to Widener for a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader and split the twinbill with the hosts. The Eagles won the first game, 4-1, thanks in part to the solid pitching performance by junior Clint Wevodau (Northern Lebanon/Annville). He went the distance, walked none, gave up one earned run and four hits (all singles) and struck out three. Wevodau had a no-hitter going into the fifth frame. Junior designated hitter Tim Keeley (Caledonia-Mumford/Caledonia, NY) went 2 for 3 with a run scored and three RBI. He had a two-run home run in the top of the first to put the Eagles up, 3-0. In the second contest, Juniata lost, 9-1. Eisenberg went 3 for 4 and he also had a stolen base.



SOFTBALL (12-13-1, 4-8 Commonwealth): Apr. 28, Moravian.

Juniata began the past seven days by dropping a doubleheader at home to Elizabethtown on Wednesday, 5-3 (10 innings) and 4-2. In the opener, the Eagles were held to three hits, while junior pitcher Christie Matthews (South Williamsport/South Williamsport) was the hard-luck loser on the mound. She went the distance, gave up 11 hits and four earned runs, walked two and struck out three. Junior shortstop Brandy Preslovich (Bald Eagle Area/Moshannon) was 1 for 4 with a double and three RBI. In the second tilt, Preslovich went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Freshman catcher Sarah Patterson (Danville/Danville) was 2 for 3, while freshman third baseman Cass Dutzer (Danville/Riverside) was 1 for 3 with a run batted in. On Saturday, the Eagles split a twinbill at Lebanon Valley. Juniata lost the first contest, 5-1. Sophomore center fielder Pam Michael (Baldwin/Pittsburgh) was 2 for 3 and had two of Juniata's six hits in the game. Preslovich was 1 for 3 and scored the lone blue and gold run. In the second outing, freshman pitcher Amy Gable (Kennard-Dale/Stewartstown) threw all seven innings and improved to 5-4 on the year. She scattered six hits throughout the Flying Dutchwomen lineup, allowed one earned run (in the seventh), walked three and struck out one. Offensively, Gable was 3 for 5 with three runs scored, while sophomore left fielder Lauren Baker (Susquehannock/Spring Grove) went 3 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Preslovich posted a 2 for 4 game with a double, two RBI and one run. Freshman second baseman Amber Helsel (Claysburg-Kimmel/Claysburg) was 2 for 4 as well.



MEN'S VOLLEYBALL (13-13, 7-7 EIVA Tait): season complete.

Juniata's season came to a close on Saturday afternoon with a 30-19, 30-14, 30-20 loss at Rutgers-Newark in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Division I Quarterfinals. The Eagles were seeded fifth in the tournament, while the Scarlet Raiders were the third seed. Juniata hit .165 as a team, compared to the hosts who tallied a .435 hitting percentage. The Scarlet Raiders also enjoyed dig and service ace advantages of 36-19 and 11-1, respectively. Freshman outside hitter Javier Garcia (San Ignacio/Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and sophomore middle hitter Chris Jones (Lower Merion/Wayne) led Juniata with six kills each. Jones paced the unit with three blocks, while Garcia tallied two rejections. Sophomore libero Ryan Jackson (Cochranton/Cochranton) posted a match-high 10 digs.

MEN'S TRACK & FIELD: Apr. 27 at Penn Relays; Apr. 28 at Western Maryland Invitational.

The Eagles journeyed to Western Maryland on Wednesday for a twi-light meet and took fifth out of six schools on hand with a limited lineup. Freshman Phil Haas (Elizabethtown/Hummelstown) took third in the 400 meters (53.0) and fifth in the 200 meters (24.7). Sophomore Sebastien Moisnard (Aslperiers/Dan, France) was fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:45.45), while sophomore Shawn Chen (Punxsutawney/DuBois) was fifth in both the shot put (35-10) and discus (107-4). Juniata traveled to Messiah on Saturday for an invitational. The Eagles placed third out of 12 teams with 103.5 points, while Messiah earned the team crown with 164.5 markers. Sophomores Noah Fredette (Weedsport/Weedsport, NY) and Dusty Lehr (Bermudian Springs/New Oxford), and senior John Creuzberger (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) each placed first in one event in the men's action. Fredette took top honors in the 800-meter run (2:00.95) and he was also third in the 1,500 meters (4:09.94). Creuzberger placed first in the shot put (48-2), while claiming second in the discus (128-6) and seventh in the hammer throw (81-4). Lehr was first in the pole vault (14-0). He was also third in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.21) and the high jump (6-2), and he was seventh in the long jump (19-4). Junior Ashley Mort (Blue Mountain/Orwisburg) took the runner-up spot in both the 100- (11.29) and 200-meter (22.70) dashes. Sophomore Nick Wolfe (McConnellsburg/McConnellsburg) was second in the 400 meters (50.72) and seventh in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (59.35). Senior Josh Kline (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) took third in the javelin (179-8) and seventh in the discus (116-6). Both the 400-meter and 1,600-meter relay units place fourth for Juniata with times of 44.55 and 3:27.29, respectively.

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD: Apr. 26 at Penn Relays; Apr. 28 at Western Maryland Invitational.

Juniata traveled to Western Maryland on Wednesday for a twi-light meet due to the outing at Pitt-Johnstown getting canceled due to poor weather and field conditions. The Eagles placed second out of the six teams on hand, but the blue and gold had a limited squad in attendance. Freshman Andrea Denkovich (Greencastle-Antrim/Greencastle) placed first in the discus (106-4) and second in the shot put (27-1 1/2). Her toss in the discus was a meet record. Freshman Carol Longenecker (Harrisonburg/Harrisonburg, VA) was second in the long jump (13-3 1/4) and fourth in the 400 meters (1:12.5), while freshman Misty Heuston (Central/Martinsburg) took first in the long jump (13-3 3/4) and triple jump (26-0 1/2), and third in the 100-meter high hurdles (20.2). Sophomore Cheryn Courtney (Mercer/Mercer) was second in the discus (98-3). The Eagles journeyed to the Messiah Invitational on Saturday and placed sixth out of the 13 teams on hand. Juniata tallied 48 points, while Gettysburg took first with 175.5 points on the day. Freshman Stefanie Rynkewitz (Lewistown/Lewistown) paced the blue and gold. She was third in the 400-meter dash (59.84), fifth in the 200 meters (27.49) and eighth in the 100 meters (13.53). Senior Kristy Wagner (Dover/Dover) took third in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (1:06.23), seventh in the long jump (14-10 1/4) and seventh in the triple jump (33-3 1/2). Sophomore Hillary Bright (Juniata Valley/Spruce Creek) placed sixth in the triple jump (33-4 1/2). Sophomore Toni Yorks (Indian Valley/Burnham) placed eighth in the 400-meter run (1:03.89). Sophomore Melissa Flint (Port Allegany/Port Allegany) was sixth in the high jump (4-10) and ninth in the 100-meter high hurdles (17.83). Longenecker took seventh in the pole vault (7-6). Courtney placed eighth in the discus (100-8), while Denkovich was ninth in the same event (96-0). Denkovich also placed fifth in the javelin (95-11) and eighth in the hammer (66-1), while senior Rebecca McMichael (Warrior Run/Danville) was sixth in the javelin (92-10). The 1,600-meter relay unit placed fourth (4:19.04), while the 400-meter relay squad was fifth on the day (52.69).
