HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Five members of the Juniata College board of trustees retired at a ceremony held during the spring semester Trustee?s Meeting in April. All five were honored with trustee emeritus titles at the ceremony.

?These five individuals have contributed in many important ways to the life of this institution,? said Juniata College president Thomas R. Kepple during their retirement ceremony. ?Their combined total of contributions to our college is an amazing 99 years of service.?

The retiring trustees are: Donovan Beachley Jr., chairman of the board of the Beachley Furniture Co. in Hagerstown Md.; F. Samuel Brumbaugh, past president of Bangor Cork Co.; Frances Hesselbein, chair of the Board of Governors of the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management; W. Clemens Rosenberger, retired executive director of The Children?s Aid Society; and Robert Wagoner, retired co-founder of Brissenden, McFarland Wagoner and Fuccella, an executive search consulting firm.

Beachley is a 1947 graduate of Juniata and earned a master?s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was named to the board of trustees in 1982. His father, Donovan Beachley Sr., a 1921 graduate, also served on the board of trustees. The Beachley family has endowed Juniata College?s most prestigious faculty awards: The Beachley Award for Distinguished Service and the Beachley Award for Distinguished Teaching.

The Beachley family founded the awards in 1968 and to date, 52 members of the Juniata faculty have received a Beachley award. Today, the awards include a cash gift of $5,000. The Beachleys also have been instrumental in the campaign to renovate Founders Hall, Juniata?s administration building.

F. Samuel Brumbaugh is a 1954 graduate of Juniata and is past president of Bangor Cork Co. in Pen Argyl, Pa. His service to Juniata includes a stint as a member of Juniata?s President?s Development Council from 1984 to 1988. He served on the college?s Alumni Council from 1987 to 1990 and volunteers for the college as a Juniata Admissions Ambassador.

Brumbaugh also served on the major gifts committee for Juniata fundraising campaigns. He was elected to the board of trustees as an alumni representative in 1987 and was appointed to the board as a trustee in 1991. He has made significant gifts to the college, including funding for the college?s state-of-the-art Brumbaugh Fitness Center. He also is active in the Lehigh Valley Alumni Club.

Brumbaugh has taken graduate courses at George Washington University and Temple University. He also has been active within his community, serving as president of the Pen Argyl School Board and as an associate director for PNC Bank. He also served as mayor of Pen Argyl.

Frances Hesselbein, chair of the Board of Governors of the Drucker Foundation, has been a Juniata trustee since 1988. She served as the founding president and chief executive officer of the foundation from 1990 to 1998. Hesselbein, an Easton, Pa. resident, also serves on many other nonprofit and corporate boards, including the board of the Mutual of America Life Insurance Co.

She served as chief executive of the Girl Scouts of the USA from 1976 to 1990, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998 for her work with the Girl Scouts and the Drucker Foundation. Former president George H. W. Bush appointed Hesselbein to two presidential commissions on national and community service.

She received an honorary degree in 1990 from Juniata and served on the college?s admissions committee since 1996. She also is editor in chief of the journal Leader to Leader and co-edited a book of the same name. She also co-edited the Drucker Foundation?s three-volume ?Future Series? and ?Leading Beyond the Walls.?

W. Clemens Rosenberger graduated from Juniata in 1954. Rosenberger, a Lancaster, Pa. resident, has been a member of the board of trustees since 1979. He retired as executive director of the Children?s Aid Society in 1997.

Rosenberger received a master of divinity degree from Bethany Theological Seminary in 1958 and was named a Merrill Fellow at Harvard Divinity School in 1965. He has served as minister for several Brethren churches, including the South Bay Community Church in Redondo Beach, Calif., New Enterprise Church of the Brethren in New Enterprise, Pa. and LaVerne Church of the Brethren in LaVerne, Calif. He also served as minister of the Lititz (Pa.) Church of the Brethren for 16 years and served eight years as minister at the Westmont Church of the Brethren in Johnstown, Pa.

In addition, he has served as chaplain of the Johnstown City Council and as a member of the British-American Preacher?s Exchange.

Rosenberger has been very active as a Juniata College volunteer. He is co-chair of the college?s Campaign for the Arts and has served as a trustee for the J. Omar Good Fund at Juniata since its inception. He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Juniata in 1982 and received the college?s Alumni Service Award in 1997. He also has served as Alumni Council president.

Robert Wagoner, a retired executive who co-founded the Brissenden, McFarland, Wagoner and Fuccella executive search firm in 1981, earned a bachelor's degree from Juniata in 1953. He was elected as alumni representative on the Juniata board of trustees in 1982 and was appointed to the board in 1985. He chaired the committee on trustees from 1987 to 1997 and currently serves as vice chair of the committee.

Wagoner, a Hummelstown, Pa. resident, has been particularly active in Juniata?s fund-raising campaigns. He served as vice chair of the advancement committee and was selected to chair the $30 million Transformations Campaign, which was completed in 1996. He also served as chair of trustee giving in the current $70 million Uncommon Outcomes Campaign. During his tenure on the board, he was a driving force to institute evaluations, orientation programs, retreats for the board of trustees and statistical tracking system at the college.

Wagoner began his business career as a geophysicist with Shell Oil Co. He switched careers by moving to IBM in 1958, starting as a systems engineer and working his way up to national account marketing manager for the Westinghouse corporate account. Leaving IBM in 1969, he served as marketing manager for Computer Sciences, a computer systems firm based in Los Angeles, Calif. He left Computer Sciences in 1972 to become vice president for Heidrick and Struggles, one of the top four international executive search firms. In 1981, he co-founded the executive search-consulting firm that includes his name. He retired from the firm in 1994.

In addition to Wagoner?s work on the Juniata board of trustees, he also served on the search committees that brought in the last two Juniata College presidents, Robert Neff, 1988 to 1998, and Thomas R. Kepple, who has been president since 1998. Wagoner received the Juniata College Presidential Medallion from former president Robert Neff in 1997 and will receive the Alumni Service Award in June 2003.
