HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Juniata College Orchestra will perform a series of well-known classical selections, including the "Peer Gynt Suite," in its fall semester concert at 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 2, in Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts.

Tickets are $5 for adults. Students under age 18 are admitted free, as are Juniata students with valid ID. The orchestra will be directed by Matthew Sheppard, lecturer in music at Juniata.

The two Grieg selections, 'Morning Mood,' and 'In the Hall of the Mountain King,' are familiar to all music fans because they have been used in film and television scores for decades.

The concert will open with selections from "The Peer Gynt Suite," by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. The two selections, "Morning Mood," and "In the Hall of the Mountain King," are familiar to all music fans because they have been used in film and television scores for decades.

The orchestra will then transition to "In the Steppes of Central Asia," by Russian composer Alexander Borodin, who also is well known for his opera "Prince Igor." The music, originally written for czar Alexander, is an aural image of a caravan of central Asian travelers under the protection of Russian troops as they make their way across the wide Russian landscape.

Next, the orchestra will play "Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra," by Wolfgang Mozart. The piece is one of the most performed pieces of music written for bassoon and Mozart composed it when he was 18 years old. Hannah Hostak, a sophomore from Centennial, Colo., will perform the bassoon solos.

The orchestra will perform "Serenade for Strings in E Minor," by Edward Elgar. Elgar is a British composer perhaps best known for his series of marches known in the United States as "Pomp and Circumstance." "Serenade" is one of Elgar's best-known early works.

The concert will close with "Carmen Suite No. 1," by Georges Bizet. The famous opera, "Carmen," was composed by Georges Bizet and premiered in 1875, only to have the composer died of a heart attack three months later. Another composer, Ernest Guiraud compiled the opera after Bizet's death.
