HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Creating a unique vision is the central focus of any artist's work and a large group of Juniata College artists studying fine arts, photography and ceramics will showcase their personal visions in a variety of media -- paintings, prints, photographs, ceramics and computer art -- at the Juniata College Museum of Art from Thursday, Feb. 16 to March 17.

There is an opening reception at the museum from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 16. The reception and continuing exhibition is free and open to the public.

The exhibit will showcase a wide-ranging selection of artworks made by Juniata students during the 2011 spring semester and the 2011-2012 academic year. The works on display were created in art classes supervised by Monika Malewska, assistant professor of art, Bethany Benson, assistant professor of art, Patricia Howard, assistant professor of art, and Susan Marie Brundage, lecturer in art.

All the pieces selected in the show were juried by Juniata's art professors and students in the college's museum studies academic program. The works will be judged by Khara Koffel, associate professor of art at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill., where she also directs the Applebee Gallery. Koffel, a 2000 Juniata College graduate, will award a first prize and two honorable mention awards.

Koffel also will give a talk on her art at 4 p.m. Feb. 16, in Neff Lecture Hall in the von Liebig Center for Science prior to the museum reception.

The pieces selected from the show go through several rounds of judging. The fine art faculty selects the best work from their respective classes. The next round of selections are made by Juniata students who are enrolled in the museum studies practicum course, where students learn how to curate art shows and other administrative skills.

"Student shows celebrate emerging artists at the college while giving them the opportunity to show their work in a professional setting," says Jennifer Streb, assistant professor of art history and curator of the museum. "The Museum Practicum students take a greater curatorial role in this exhibition so that the show truly represents the efforts of students and the Department of Art and Art History."

The Juniata students involved in curating the show are: Tim Carn, a senior from Middletown, Pa. and gallery manager; Alexandra Irerra, a senior from Houston, Texas; Isabelle Goelet, a senior from Sparks, Md.; Elizabeth Sunde, a junior from Farmingdale, N.Y.; Elena Popchock, a junior from Newport, Pa.; Gabriella Ricciardi, a junior from Massapequa, N.Y.; and Megan O'Connor, a junior from Palmyra, Pa.

The museum is located in historic Carnegie Hall at 17th and Moore streets in Huntingdon. Museum hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. For more information, please call the museum at (814) 641-3505, or visit the Juniata College Web site at http://www.juniata.edu/museum.
