HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Hannah Miller, a sophomore at Juniata College from Hanover, Pa., majoring in international studies, recently received a Finnegan Fellowship from the James A. Finnegan Foundation, which will offer Miller a paid, 10-week internship this summer at one of Pennsylvania's executive agencies.

Miller attended the Governor's Luncheon March 25 at Gov. Tom Corbett's Residence. Typically members of the governor's staff meet with each Finnegan Fellow to determine their interests. Each Fellow will be matched in an internship with an agency that reflects his or her individual interests.

Next year during the 2011-2012 academic year, Miller will study abroad for the entire year. She will spend fall semester at France's University of Lille and spring semester at the University of Fez in Morocco.

Miller, the daughter of David and Kathy Miller of Hanover, received the internship on the strength of an essay, letters of recommendation, college transcripts and extracurricular activities.

Miller has been an active participant in campus clubs and organizations on campus and in her community. She is a member of PAX-O, Juniata's student club for peace and conflict studies, and manages the club Facebook page. She also is a member of the Juniata College Concert Choir and has traveled with the ensemble on tours of Brazil and the United States.

She also is a member of the Brethren Student Fellowship and works as liaison between the college and the nearby Stone Church of the Brethren, where she coordinates college activities and manages the church's Facebook page. Last summer, she also worked at an internship at the Manassas (Va.) Church of the Brethren.

This coming summer, Miller will travel to The Gambia on the west coast of Africa to participate in a summer study abroad experience. Next year during the 2011-2012 academic year, she will study abroad for the entire year. She will spend fall semester at France's University of Lille and spring semester at the University of Fez in Morocco.

Miller also received the Hofelt Writing Award in 2010 for exemplary writing in Juniata's freshman writing course.

The James A. Finnegan Foundation was established in 1960 to honor the memory of James A. Finnegan, Secretary of Pennsylvania from 1955 to 1958. Finnegan fellowships have been awarded since 1960. Finnegan served under Pennsylvania Gov. George M. Leader. Prior to his service as Secretary, Finnegan was president of the Philadelphia City Council from 1951 to 1955.
