Complete 2011 Susquehanna Univ. Jim Taylor Invitational results

SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Juniata College senior Steve Schmitt (New Providence, Pa./Solanco) won the 10,000m race while junior Jess Koenig (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) posted a Juniata record time in the 5,000m, to highlight Eagle results at Saturday's Susquehanna University Jim Taylor Invitational at Lopardo Stadium.

Schmitt ran the 10,000m in a time of 33:01.46, with senior Kenny Goodfellow (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) close behind in fourth place (33:32.32).

Meanwhile Koenig, who ran the 1,500m earlier in the day, completed the 5,000m in a time of 18:26.65 to finish ninth in the event, setting a new Juniata record in the process. Katrina Woods (Shirleysburg, Pa./Mount Union) ran the same two-event sequence, and posted a 13th place finish (18:42.30) in her first-ever 5,000m.

In the 1,500m race, Alyssa Grube (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) was the top Juniata finisher in seventh place (5:00.79), while Woods was ninth (5:02.74) and Koenig was 21st (5:17.15). Megan McQuillan (Severna Park, Md./Seton Keough) was in the mix in 12th place (5:03.98).

Grube also placed ninth in the 800m with a time of 2:27.87, with McQuillan finishing 28th (2:39.89). Caroline Morgan (Havertown, Pa./Haverford Township) was third (40:09.95) in the 10,000m.

In the women's field events, both Stephanie Varner (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon Area) and Angela Shaffer (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock) both posted third place finishes, with Varner placing third in the pole vault (10-0) while Shaffer was third in the high jump (4-11 3/4). Kaitlyn Shultz (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) paced the Eagles with an eighth place finish in the hammer (111-11), Kristyn Ginter (Tyrone, Pa./Bellwood-Antis) placed 18th in the discus (83-3) and Evan Beatty (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) was 13th (31-8 �¾) to lead Juniata in the shot put.

On the men's side, Ross Black was eighth in the 110m hurdles (18.17), as was Nick Bauer (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) in the 100m dash (11.58). Vinny Smith nearly match Black, but had to settle for ninth place in the 400m hurdles (1:01.84). Black also ran in the 400m hurdles, finishing 12th in a time of 1:06.02.

The Juniata men had more success in the field events, where Bauer was second in the triple jump (42-1 1/2 and third in the long jump (20-1 1/2), leading a parade of top ten finishes.

Jeremy Hays (McMechen, W.Va./John Marshall) earned a fifth place finish in the high jump with a mark of 5-10, while Justin Clapper (Buffalo Mills, Pa./Bedford) was seventh in both the pole vault (12-11 1/2) and the discus (122-0). Jack Iosue (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) was eighth in the hammer throw (120-9), and Justin Herr (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) posted a ninth place finish in the triple jump (36-9 3/4), and was 23rd in the long jump (16-8 1/2).

Juniata men's and women's track and field continues with the outdoor season next Saturday, April 2, when it hosts the Juniata Invitational at Oller Track at Knox Stadium.
