HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College senior track athlete Matt Bailey (East Petersburg, Pa./Hempfield) has been awarded the Landmark Conference's highest academic award, as he was among eight student-athletes from across the eight Landmark institutions honored on Thursday as a Landmark Conference Senior Scholar Athlete.

Bailey was named the Landmark's Senior Scholar Athlete for men's outdoor track and field for 2009-10, becoming just the sixth Juniata student-athlete to earn a Senior Scholar Athlete award. He is the third Eagle student-athlete to earn a Senior Scholar Award this academic year, joining Megan Sollenberger (women's volleyball) and Jeff Berkey (men's basketball).

Bailey capped a stellar career by winning the 10,000m at the 2010 Landmark Outdoor Track and Field Championships, also finishing fourth in the 5,000m. He ran the anchor leg in Juniata's championship squad in the Distance Medley Relay at the 2010 Landmark indoor meet, and placed second in the 5,000m.

Bailey began his senior season by becoming the first Juniata male to compete in the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships, after finishing 27th at the NCAA Mideast Regional meet and earning USTFCCCA All-Region honors. At various points over his four years at Juniata, he earned multiple All-Landmark Conference honors in cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field.

Arguably the finest distance runner in Juniata history, he currently owns Juniata outdoor records in the 10,000m, the 5,000m, and the 3,000m. He also currently holds the Juniata indoor record in the 5,000m, and is a member of the Juniata record-setting team in the DMR.

A magna cum laude May 2010 graduate of Juniata with a bachelor's degree in biochemistry, with secondary emphasis in philosophy, Bailey was a seven-time Dean's List selection and honoree on the Landmark's Academic Honor Roll. He was named to the Landmark's All-Academic Team in Fall 2007 and Spring 2010, and was a member of both the biology and chemistry honor societies. Bailey was inducted into Juniata's chapter of the Omicron Delta Kappa national leadership society, and was a member of the Juniata College Orchestra.
