HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- American composers ranging from Gershwin to Copland to Bernstein will be the focus of the Juniata College Wind Symphony concert "A Very American Sound" at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 18, in Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts.

Admission is $5 for adults. Admission for Juniata students with ID and those under the age of 18 will be free.

The Juniata College Wind Symphony is conducted by James Latten, associate professor of music.

In addition to honoring an all-star roster of American composers, the Wind Symphony also will highlight various student musicians.

The group will perform iconic works by two of the most popular American composers: Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland. "Overture to Candide," originally written by Bernstein as an operetta, has become one of the most frequently performed orchestral pieces. "Fanfare for the Common Man," written by Copland to honor American servicemen in World War II, has been recorded countless times, including a rock version by Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

The entire ensemble will then perform "Chant and Jubilo," by composer Francis McBeth, a native of Texas. He is a retired professor of music at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark.

Three Juniata trumpet players will be featured on the tune "Bugler's Holiday," by Leroy Anderson. Anderson is best known for composing the Christmas tune "Sleigh Ride" and "The Syncopated Clock." The Juniata trumpeters are: Melissa King, a sophomore from Newtown, Conn.; Caroline White, a freshman from Chambersburg, Pa.; and Katie Downey, a freshman from Warren, Pa.

In the second half of the program, the college's Clarinet Choir will be featured on "Canzona De Sonare," by Girolamo Frescobaldi, an Italian Renaissance composer.

Juniata student Dessie Schwentner, a junior from St. Marys, Pa., will be featured as vocalist on "Angels in the Architechture," by Frank Ticheli, a professor of music at the University of Southern California best known for his compositions for concert and marching bands. Ticheli served as a guest conductor for the Juniata ensemble in 2008.

Pianist Emily Brant, a senior from Garrett, Pa., will accompany the ensemble on "Rhapsody in Blue," the classic jazz-influenced composition by George Gershwin. The ensemble will play a "Rhapsody" arrangement written by American composer Ferde Grofe, best known for his work "Grand Canyon Suite."
