-HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Students with interests in history ranging from the Civil War to civil rights from 20 area middle and high schools competed Wednesday, March 26 in the 23rd annual District History Day, held at Juniata College in Huntingdon.

First- through third-place finishers were announced in two divisions -- the junior division for grades six through eight, and the senior division for students in grades nine through 12. Each student prepared projects in keeping with this year's theme: "Conflict and Compromise in History." The state final competition will be held at Millersville University in Millersville, Pa., May 13 and 14 and the national finals will take place June 15 to 19, at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md.

Students competed in nine categories: Historical paper (1,500-2,500 words, individuals only); individual exhibit; group exhibit; individual performance (such as short plays or interpretive readings); group performance; documentaries; group documentaries; individual Web page; and group Web page.

Participating schools were: Central High School (Martinsburg, Pa.); Donald H. Eichorn Middle School (in Lewisburg, Pa.); Hollidaysburg Area Junior High School; Huntingdon Area Middle School; Juniata Valley Junior and Senior High School; Lewistown Middle School; Lewistown Area High School; Middleburg Middle School; Mount Nittany Middle School; Park Forest Middle School; Phillipsburg-Osceola Senior High School; Selinsgrove Area High School; Shikellamy High School; Spring Cove Middle School; Southern Huntingdon County High School; State College Area High School; Strodes Mills Middle School; Tyrone Area Middle and High School; and West Snyder Middle School. Several home-schooled students also competed.

Juniata College students studying in history, politics, secondary education, social studies, business, psychology and other programs served as judges for the competition.

The Local History senior division prize was awarded to Brice Barrett, 10th grade, Tyrone Area High School, for "The Attempted Sabotage of the Horseshoe Curve." The local history junior division prize went to "The Molly Maguires: The Tale of the Bloodstained Coal Mines," Rachel Ladd, Scott Leighow, 7th grade, Donald H. Eichorn Middle School.

The Global History senior division prize was awarded to Rachel Fry, Shana West, 9th grade, Central High School, for "Cleopatra: A Life of Compromise in a Time of Conflict." The Global History junior division prize went to "Presenting Prokofiev: Conducted by Stalin," Alexander Woskob, 6th grade, Mount Nittany Middle School.
