HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College records in two men's and three women's events were set over the weekend as the men's and women's track and field teams competed as a "split squad" at a pair of indoor events on February 8 and 9.

Juniata sent competitors to both the Susquehanna Invitational, held Friday, Feb. 8, in Selinsgrove, Pa., as well as the Bucknell Winter Classic on Saturday, Feb. 9, in Lewisburg, Pa.

At the Susquehanna Invitational, senior Tommy Beideman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) eclipsed by nearly a foot the school record in the weight throw with a throw of 38-4. Beideman's throw was good enough for 10th place.

Freshman Stephanie Varner (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) turned in the second record-breaking performance of the evening, shattering her week-old record in the pole vault by clearing a height of 9-6 ¼. Varner finished third in the pole vault, the highest individual finish of any Juniata athlete over the course of the weekend.

Three more records were set during Saturday competition at the Bucknell Winter Classic.

Sophomore Matt Bailey (East Petersburg, Pa./Hempfield) finished 16th overall in the 3000 meters with a time of 9:07.32, breaking by six seconds the previous mark set two years ago by Michael Chirdon.

Sophomore TJ Breya (McClure, Pa./East Juniata) posted a time of 1:11.00 in the men's 500 meters, finishing 12th overall and besting the old record by two seconds. Finally, newcomer Courtney DeGemmis (Lansdale, Pa./Methacton) posted an eighth place finish in the women's 500 meters with a time of 1:25.71, surpassing the previous record, set in 2001 by Carla Kifer, by 34 seconds.
Seven other individuals recorded performances that rank among the top-five all-time at Juniata.

The men's weight throw at Susquehanna produced two performances among the Eagle top five for freshman Josh Cavendar (Elizabethtown, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) and sophomore Jeremy Boback. In addition to Beideman's school record, Cavender's throw of 34-10 ¼ ranks him third all-time and was good enough for 15th in the meet. Boback's 16th place throw of 34-9 ½ ranks him fourth all-time at Juniata.

At Bucknell, one of the biggest highlights of the weekend for the Eagles came from sophomore Ryan Baird (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin), who finished fourth in the pole vault. He improved his previous best by over a foot as he cleared 14-3 ¼ to move into second place on the Juniata College ranking list.

The other top-five all-time performances for the Juniata men at Bucknell came from the distance runners. Senior Eric Hoover (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) ran the mile in 4:33.51 to finish 17th in the race and move into third on the Juniata all-time list. Senior Jason Hoover (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) ran the 1000 meter race in 2:45.47 to finish 15th and move into fifth on the all-time list. Finally, sophomore Sam Williams (Roaring Spring, Pa./Central) joined Bailey on the top-five list in the 3000 meter race, as his time of 9:22.26 ranks fourth all-time at Juniata and was good enough for 22nd in the event at the Bucknell meet.

On the women's side, sophomore Melissa Johnson (Colonia, N.J./John F. Kennedy) recorded the fourth-best performance in the Juniata all-time top five as she ran the 400 meter race in 1:03.94 to finish 19th.
Senior Matthew Booth (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) continued his strong indoor campaign, as he recorded two fourth place finishes at Bucknell in the long jump (21-11 ½) and triple jump (43-5 ¼).
