HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Amber Thomas (Ephrata, Pa./Conestoga Valley), a junior outside hitter on the Juniata College women's volleyball team, has been named a finalist for the Collegiate Women Sports Awards' 2007-08 Division III Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year.
Thomas will be one of 11 finalists for the award, which is sponsored by Honda and will be presented on June 23, 2008, at Columbia University in New York City.
Thomas led Juniata College to a 37-5 record in 2007, a Landmark Conference championship, and the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship, with a team-high 525 kills (4.49/g). She also tallied 322 digs (2.75/g) with 44 total blocks and 21 service aces.
Thomas was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Player of the Year, as well as an AVCA First Team All-America honoree. She was Landmark Conference Player of the Year, and a First Team All-Landmark Conference selection.
The Collegiate Women Sports Awards program, now in its 32nd year, is sponsored by the American Honda Motor Co., Inc., which will donate $1,000 toward women's athletics at Juniata College.
Other 2007-08 finalists announced by the Board of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards were Bowdoin College's Lindsey McNamara (field hockey) and Willamette University's Sarah Zerzan (cross country).
This marks the second consecutive year that a Juniata College student-athlete has been a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year award; former Juniata College women's volleyball standout Stephanie Kines was a finalist for last year's award, which was presented to DePauw University's Liz Bondi (tennis/basketball).
