Juniata 4, Rutgers-Camden 3 HUNTINGDON, Pa. ? Freshmen Amanda Broadwell (Morris Knolls/Newfoundland, N.J.) and Laura Goodlander (Red Land/Red Land) scored critical second-half goals and goalkeeper Lisa Russo (Lakeland/Haskell, N.J.) stopped a penalty shot to help the Juniata College women?s soccer team hold off visiting Rutgers-Camden for a 4-3 win in non-conference action in Huntingdon Monday afternoon. The win was the third straight for Juniata which improved to 3-1, while Rutgers-Camden dropped to 3-1 on the season. After jumping out to an early two-goal lead, Juniata found itself tied at the half following a pair of Rutgers-Camden goals midway through the first period. Juniata then took the lead when Broadwell collected the ball just outside the 18-yard line and drilled a strike into the upper right corner to give Juniata a 3-2 edge in the 51st minute. Eleven minutes later Russo would help preserve that lead as a hand ball in the box gave Rutgers-Camden a penalty kick. But Russo parried Heather Thom?s low shot and Juniata cleared the ball keep the lead at one. The Eagles then turned that momentum into another goal as Goodlander launched a long shot after a failed clearance that snuck into the upper corner to give Juniata a 4-2 cushion. Rutgers-Camden continued to battle back, cutting the lead to one when Kate Campbell knocked home a rebound off a Katie O?Connor shot to make the score 4-3 Juniata with 20 minutes still remaining in the match. The Lady Raptors would fire off several more shots the rest of the way, but Russo made two of her four saves in the final 20 minutes to preserve the win. Early in the contest it looked like Juniata would enjoy a relatively easy day as the home team put two goals on the board in the first 10 minutes. An own goal from a Rutgers-Camden defender in the seventh minute was the first tally, and then two minutes later Alicia Walsh (Latrobe/Latrobe) slid a shot past Rutgers-Camden keeper Kristen Cargen to put Juniata in front 2-0. The visitors answered with a quick flurry of their own as they knotted the score with two goals in a three minute span. Jessica Leoni beat two defenders in the 18-yard box to knock home the first goal at 21:03. Two minutes later, a Leoni cross found Kendyll Clayton in the box, and she knocked home the second score to tie the match at two goals apiece. The visitors outshot Juniata 10-7 in the match and earned five corner kicks compared to one for the Eagles. Cargen played the first 45 minutes for Rutgers-Camden and finished with two saves, while Jayme Gatti made one stop in goal in the second half. Juniata will look to keep its winning streak going when the Eagles host Lycoming College Wednesday in a game that will be played at Detwiler Field. ###
