Marietta 1, Juniata 0 Marietta, Ohio. ? The Juniata College women?s soccer team played well enough to win its season opener against host Marietta College in the opening match of the 2006 Marietta Soccer Classic, but the bounces did not go Juniata?s way as the Eagles suffered a 1-0 set-back Saturday afternoon. Despite out-shooting the home team by a 7-4 margin, the Blue and Gold were unable to find the back of the net in the contest. Senior Alicia Walsh (Latrobe/Latrobe) and freshman Sarah Ruggiero (Bangor/Bangor) each posted a team-high two shots for Juniata. After a scoreless first half in which the teams combined for just three shots, the offense picked up for both teams in the second stanza. The Eagles forced Marietta keeper Jenna Freeman into six second-half saves, while Juniata?s Lisa Russo (Lakeland/Haskell, N.J.) made two second-half stops. But Russo was unable to come up with the stop as Marietta struck for the only goal of the match in the 66th minute. Marianne Siders knocked home a cross from Katurah Hansen with the game?s only goal. Russo finished with three saves overall for Juniata, while Freeman tallied seven saves in the match. Juniata will wrap up competition at the tournament on Sunday with a match against Mount Union. ###
