HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Harvey Mansfield, professor of government at Harvard University, will speak on "What Has Happened to Manliness," sponsored by the William G. and Mary A. Nyce Lectureship, at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10 in the faculty lounge in Ellis College Center on the Juniata College campus

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Mansfield is the William R. Kenan Jr., Professor of Government at Harvard University, where he studies and teaches political philosophy. He has written numerous articles and books on political thought and how it has evolved. He is currently researching a book on manliness.

In addition, Mansfield has translated and edited editions of Machiavelli's "The Prince" and most recently, Alexis de Tocqueville's "Democracy in America." He also has written on Edmund Burke and the nature of political parties, and on the discovery and development of the theory of executive power.

"Dr. Mansfield is a distinguished scholar as an interpreter of liberalism and as an interpreter of Machiavelli," says Jack Barlow, professor of politics at Juniata. "He also plays an important role in today's culture because many of his students have gone on to influential positions in government, higher education and journalism."

Mansfield is a graduate of Harvard, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1953 and a doctorate in 1961. He was chairman of the Harvard's government department from 1973-1977, has held Guggenheim and NEH Fellowships, and has been a Fellow at the National Humanities Center.

He joined the Harvard faculty in as a lecturer in 1962. He was promoted to assistant professor in 1964, and to associate professor in 1966. He was promoted to full professor in 1969. He also has been the subject of a book, "Educating the Prince: Essays in Honor of Harvey Mansfield," which was written by 20 of Mansfield's former students.

His own books include "The Spirit of Liberalism," "Selected Letters of Edmund Burke" and "Taming the Prince: The Ambivalence of Modern Executive Power."

The William G. and Mary A. Nyce Lectureship brings to the Juniata College community respected American and international scholars and public figures with a global perspective for the purpose of enlivening interest and broadening understanding of crucial world issues.
