Juniata 78, Pitt-Bradford 50

Wilmington, Ohio ? Juniata bounced back nicely from its season-opening loss to knock off Pitt-Bradford, 78-50, in the consolation game of the Wilmington Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon. The Eagles are now 1-1 two games into their young season.

The Eagles got off to a fast start and never looked back. Down 2-0 a minute into the game, Jess Winemiller (Dallastown/York) would rattle of 10 consecutive points to give the Eagles a lead they would never relinquish. Winemiller started the scoring outburst with a lay-up and then drained a three-pointer on Juniata?s next possession. She knocked down two free throws after being fouled after steal, and then hit another three to cap the 10-point run.

Winemiller finished with a career-high 26 points to lead the Eagles in scoring for the second consecutive game. She also totaled six rebounds and five steals.

Kristen Kirk (Newport/Newport) sent Juniata into the locker room with its biggest lead of the first half ? 24 points - when she drained a three with just 38 seconds left in the half.

The second half was much of the same for Juniata. The Eagle?s lead would balloon to as much as 32 after Mindy Werner (West York/York) found Courtney Callas (Freeport/Sarver) for a lay-up five minutes into the half. Juniata maintained its lead the rest of the way en route to the 28-point win.

Callas scored 12 points, second on the team behind Winemiller. While no one else reached double figures, Juniata got plenty of scoring. Eleven players got on the board for the Eagle?s to round out a balanced scoring attack.

Werner finished with five assists to pace the Eagles, while Winemiller and Leslie Snoby (Johnstown/Johnstown) lead the team with six rebounds.

Sarah Lyon led Pitt-Bradford with 22 points in the loss.

Juniata returns to action this Tuesday when they travel to take on Penn State-Altoona.
